8 month DD refusing to eat from spoon

DD has been off her food & generally under the weather for a week. She seems to be brighter in the last couple of days but she's gone from being a really easy eater to being really fussy.

She'll hardly take anything from a spoon and is showing no signs of wanting to feed herself. If I put small chunks of foods into her mouth she'll gum these down but isn't very good at it as has no teeth. She's often tried to swallow food before it's mushed down and then sicked up everything I've gotten her to take during the meal!

Any advice on what I can offer her that she might be able to eat? Now she's not had a proper meal for over a week I really need to focus on nutritious foods too.

Thank you!

Try her with some finger food or just put a bowl of her normal food in front of her and see what she does with it.

Have a look at this for reassurance.

Not much good long term - but dd had phases like this and the Ella's Organics fruit and veg purees were great. She'd suck them straight from the pouch. She'd also do the same with the squeezy yoghurts

DD also 8mo has started this over the last couple of weeks too. Yesterday I finally bit the bullet and dumped every jar in the house. She was so much better with a variety of things on her tray which she could play with and feed herself. I was too much of a coward and control freak to try proper blw but I'm converted. It absolutely seems to be the way forward.

as long as my ds has some finger food in front ofhim to play with, he will let me feed him some mushy food from a spoon too.

sometimes he has his own selection of spoons, instead of finger food, while i feed him.

i don't shove it in. i let him open his mouth to the offered spoon.

try feeding her mush by hand?
mush (not runny stuff) pinch it together with two fingers and your thumb, offer it, and pop it in her mouth.

maybe just until she'll take a spoon again, or feed herself?

just a wee phase, i'll bet. let her tank up on milk, that's maybe what she needs if she's been ill. don't worry about it yet.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I think offering her mush by hand is the way forward. I offered her some soggy cheerios this morning on a spoon and she buttoned her lips and cried. I took them off the spoon and held them infront of her and she opened up her mouth ... go figure?!

wendyh, thats exactly what ds did a few weeks ago. he's back with spoons now and his own fingers.

strange eh?

its aversion to the spoon, not the food.

as long as she's willing to take off your finger, should be fine.
