Has anyone ever fed their baby a banana like this??

Was sat in a cafe this morning having a drink and there was a couple with a baby (approx 8 or 9 months - am rubbish at guessing the age of babies)

Anyway, the mum was feeding the baby a banana by pinching bits of the banana off and putting them in the baby's mouth - but when I say bits, I mean the smallest possible bits you can get off a banana - so it was pretty much like a dot of mush on her finger.

No surprises that it took a LONG time for them to finish! Surely if you wanted to mash it, it would have been easier to get a fork and a bowl from the counter and mash it up in that.

I am sure DS was eating chunks of banana by that age - I think he would have gone mad at me had I tried to give him such tiny tiny bits one at a time and just grabbed the banana off me and shoved it in his gob

I've done that. Some babies will cram it all in till they gag and others are anti-spooners.

I just got a spoon and "scratched" the banana with a spoon for my ds.

DD and ds2 I would have just given them the lot but ds1 I would have fed tiny bits because he was a real puker.

perhaps she thought her fingers were cleaner than the crokery in the cafe? I think some people are sterilising at that stage?

I do this a lot - just pinch bits off and offer them to ds.

Have progressed to breaking little bits off to put on his highchair tray and see if he does it himself.

Why did it seem so strange to you Ceebee? Genuinely puzzled!

Mind you I use slightly bigger pieces than a 'dot' I suppose...

I've done this when i've been on a train and when ds is in his pushchair. Banana mush would have just gone everywhere if i'd given it to ds. If he's in his high chair i let him just get on with it. I also do the scrapping with the spoon thing when the banana is really over-ripe.

Fanlight - it was the size of the pieces she was giving the baby - not the pinching off bits - they really were tiny.

who cares? it's really random that people worry about these things. I used to pre-chew food for dd then pop it in her mouth - now that would really freak people out.

i dont do the dot thing either just mouth size lumps. As ds will chew it.

Dd1 used to gag on lumps until she was well over 1 year old. Dd2 would have just eaten a whole banana.

Maybe they were trying to make it last to shut the baby up whilst they drank/ate?

and some children are funny about solids - my dd was well over a year before she would eat more than tiny bits the size of an ant.

Perhaps the mum wanted it to take a looooong time so she got longer to sit in the cafe with her partner and a happy baby?

I used to do this all the time - my two are such little gannets that if I gave them banana themselves they would have shoved the lot in and looked for the next snack! OMDB is right - at least if I control the speed at which they eat at least I finish my coffee at a relatively leisurely pace!!

Unless I pick bits off (although the bits are quite good sizes now), my DS just squishes it in his hands!!
