Weaning

is babyrice causing constipation?

Ive just started weaning my DD. She will be 6 months next week. I have tried her with pureed carrot, butternut squash, sweetpotato but she doesnt seem to like it and retches on it. She had mashed banana and avocado yesterday which she really enjoyed.
So mainly ive been giving her babyrice mixed with fruit puree which she loves and also helps with her sleeping (she had been waking several times a night to be bf). Now she wakes once or not at all.
However i am concerned as yesterday and earlier today she had no poos ( she has regular runny bf poos usually) and ive just done her nappy and it was thick, sticky and foul smelling poo ( sorry to be so graphic!!)
I know it changes when they're on solids but it wasnt like that with ds.
Im assuming its the babyrice. Should i stop the br and wait for the constipation to stop but then what? She wont eat the veg ive tried her with. Should i delay weaning for a bit longer? My friend suggested that i give her dilute orange from a cup to ease the constipation. Should i be giving her water anyway? help....advice needed!!

i would cut back on food and give her as much breastmilk as she wants.. if she is taking less as not feeding at night, that might be an issue. also bananas can be really constipating for little ones..

at this point in time, milk is the main source of nutrition and food is a compliment

so i would hold back on food and get lots more milk into her

banana is a very damp food and difficult to digest, it triggers eczema for me, apparently it's better to digest if it is cooked. Try skipping it for a day or so and see if there's a difference.

could be teething

my ds tends to get rather 'blocked up' before a tooth comes through and then once it does the flood gates open and he gets the squits really badly

so might not be because of her diet

thanks for the replies. I think i'll just stop food altogether until the constipation is settled and rethink the weaning. Something hasnt agreed with her and i suppose theres no rush is there.

forgot to say,
I always give water when he is constipated it definitely helps to get things moving,
and 6 months is a good age to start introducing water from a beaker if you haven't yet

that sounds like a good idea... leaving it a week or two and you might find she take to it a lot better.. also you can just go straight to finger food www.babyledweaning.com

no this won't get in the way with your BFing as she will probably only take a really small amount to begin with anyway.

I wouldn't give wheat or banana or red meat as very first foods. I recommend the book published by the Insitute of Optimum Nutrition here

is it? well, you don;t need to give banana, do you?

mashed avocado alone is good

steamed broccoli, cauliflower, pear, toast fingers , rice cakes etc are all good too

I knew not to give gluten, meat and dairy...thought i was playing it safe by just giving veg and fruit. Might think about BLW...saves pureeing...although i now have a freezer full of veg ice cubes

You wouldn't normally suspect a banana The Op Nutrition book is superb imho

your lo doesnt actually sound constipated to me as it is not the length of time between poos but how hard they are when they arrive. If she had hard little rabbit poos then yes she is constipated but for it still to be soft then she isnt constipated. Her body will just be adjusting to the new foods. Banana and baby rice can be constipating but then again some lo's find no problems with them. My ds regularly goes 2 or 3 days without pooing but then does a big explosion - they dont have to poo every day to be healthy. I would offer a little water in a beaker along with the solids - more to get used to the cup than the liquid.

Thanks seona, i didnt give her usual meal tonight just to see if it makes a difference. Gave her a few sips of water too from a cup. Realise that her change in poo is probably normal but just changed so drastically, from pooing several times a day to not at all.
Going to see how she sleeps tonight and see how her lack of solids effects her. Dont want to go back to feeding a lot during the night.
