fruit and veg have more calories than breastmilk? Please tell me she's barking!

DS is 22 weeks old and we're holding off solids for at least another two weeks, when I'd like to try BLW. I took him for a weigh-in today and he'd dropped ever so slightly off his 25th centile line, to which he's stuck like a magnet since birth, pretty much. HV wasn't concerned, but said perhaps I'd do well to consider starting solids in next week or two (I told her I was planning to wait until at least 24 wks). She did say he was thriving and doing well, so maybe she just says this to everyone at the 22 week mark if they're not there yet.

Then she said that solids would be more calorific, weight for weight, that breastmilk, because they were more - 'calorie dense', I think she said.

She's wrong, I presume? She had fruit and veg in mind, not cheese or anything. I'm not worried, but I was assuming that his weight would actually slow when we started solids, not gain!

W-R-O-N-G.
And also against current government and WHO guidelines.

meant to add though, that technically stuff liek baby rice/porridge could have more calories.
because it has a few itself, and you're mixing it with breastmilk. (so, bm calories, plus the few from rice)

but if you're doing that then you may as well just be feeding!

Thanks for all your responses! I take the point about the baby having the same amount of milk plus a bit of food, but I'm pretty sure she meant, weight for weight. I've had very good sessions with her before now, it's a shame to discover her feet of clay.

There's another HV that they must keep hidden in a cupboard because I only met her the other week when I was asking her about teething, and she practically rubbed her hands in glee when I said we wanted to try BLW (which I always manage to call baby-wed leaning...) and wanted to know how it went. So they're not all nuts...

Another case of C-R-A-Z-Y HV!! MamaHobgoblin trust me I've been calorie obsessed pretty much all my life and veg are not going to have more than milk. Perhaps what she was getting at was that they could add calories on top of milk calories and not instead of.

Full fat yoghurt would have more calories than milk though. Also Sweet potato and potato are obviously higher in calories than other veg. If you could get DS to eat avocado then that would be perfect as this is very high in calories and also Omega 3 but I think you can only introduce that at 7 mths so check.

Yes, I've had this from one HV (because DD is small for her age and must be fattened up for market ).

I must admit (shame on me because I did know better!) I caved into pressure and started solids at 22 weeks. Guess what? DD then put on 2oz in 3 weeks and fell off the bottom of the growth chart. So, yes, IME the HV is wrong. Now there's a surprise.

And though I suppose on paper solids are supposed to top up DD's milk intake, it isn't easy getting much milk into her when she's filled her little tummy with pureed sweet potato...

Oh, and where are these babies that will eat avocado?

Bit of an aside - Mog, I think some of the avocado eating babies are eating it mashed approx half and half with banana. Actually rather nice. (And portable for out'n'about. Just need a fork and a saucer).

she is barking

if he is sitting up though, you could always stick him in his highchair with a few bits of pear or banana or brocolli and see what happens.

Sorry for the slight hijack but thanks for the info, ShePee. Unfortunately DD has decided that bananas are also on the no-no, spit-it-out-all-over-Mommy list! I'm making a note of it, though, and will give it a try in a couple of weeks when I'm hoping to reintroduce the banana.
