6 month old baby started weaning ....loads of poo

Hi,
Around 2 and a half weeks ago I started to introduce solids to my breast fed 6 month old. As I had waited for the full 6 months, my health visitor advised that I move through the different weaning stages quite quickly. She is now on three small meals a day - mostly homecooked veg and fruit such as carrot, sweet potato, peas, apple, banana and lentil, with porridge in the morning and the odd organic jar of food. I am still breastfeeding 4-5 times a day in addition to this.
My baby has had 7 poos today mostly quite solid but also with a couple of very runny diarrhea type ones. She also seems a bit out of sorts.
I am a wee bit worried. Have i moved too fast here? Should I slow down? Will her system be toiling to cope? Or is it normal to see such a change? She only had 1-2 poos a day when exclusively breastfeeding.
All advice appreciated

I think your HV is misguided. There is no reason to rush weaning; taking it slowly won't cause any problems at all since her main source of calories should still be milk.

I would slow down a bit, and go for a smaller amount of solids. Let her get used to having little tastes of food rather than trying to get her onto three meals a day.

Agree with shitehawk, don't be tempted to rush her. At this stage she doesn't NEED the solid food in nutritional terms, its more about getting used to the process and trying out different tastes and textures. What you're giving sounds perfect, perhaps cut down the amounts or give breakfast and tea only for a week or 2. DS2 is 9 months and we've only just got to the 3 meals a day stage.

My HV is trying to get my not quite 7 month old onto three meals a day plus pudding. I panicked for a little while then decided I was going to ignore her. DD usually wants to sleep very late in the mornings so she has brunch at about 11 and then tea later. She also has plenty of milk which I refuse to cut down yet. If I try to hold back on the milk and fit more food in she won't have it. She is simply not interested in food very much and will only eat bits here and there although a good variety. There is no rush.

Oh and she pooed her body weight for the first 48 hours but she did settle down.

You know, in the bad old days when I didn't know any better and thought that HVs knew what they were talking about, I weaned my daughter at 16 weeks (don't shoot me; this was over seven years ago and I didn't have MN then) - and even then the HVs didn't expect her to be on three solid meals a day by six months.

Two and a half weeks is a ridiculously short time to go from no solid food at all, to having three meals a day; it would be no small wonder if her tummy wasn't upset by it.

Thanks to all. Her meals haven't been huge, just a few mouthfuls, but I will calm things down for a while and see how we get on. Much appreciated.
