Weaning

My 6 month old wont eat pureed dinners

He will eat pureed carrots, turnip, sweet potato, apple, pear and loves banana (incidentally, is a banana every day too much?) Recently I have pureed chicken with potato and peas, chicken with carrot, turnip and broccoli and mince with carrot and turnip. He will open his mouth but then cries when he tastes it. I have tried giving 1 spoonful of dinner, then a spoon of apple so he will open his mouth again, but he has cottoned on to this. He was weaned at 18 weeks because even the hungry baby milk didnt satisfy him. He took to solids straight away, but is now being difficult. I feel I need to get more calories into him as HV said veggies contain very little. Am I being neurotic? Any advice please?

Sounds like he doesn't like the texture.

Try BLW.

Search for Aitch's blog.

milk should still be the main source of his nutrition for the first year. veg has calories in it, but milk has more

try www.babyledweaning.com for ideas of finger food to give

don;t worry too much about how much food he has, as long as lots of milk
bananas are good but can constipate

Meat can be quite a strong taste for babies.. maybe try lentils, cheese, beans etc if you're concerned about protein levels

thanks, will try blw, aitchs blog looks interesting. he still has 8 oz bottle after a feed, so i know hes not going hungry. i just want to expand his taste range while hes young. just seems a nightmare getting savoury stuff inti him!

you should offer milk before food at this age

also, there is no hurry to introduce him at any certain age to different foods.... he will develop his own tastes and favourites as he gets older...

Does he eat finger foods? My DD2 was weaned at 18 weeks - same thing - hungry baby wouldn't satisfy her. She was STARVING. ANyway, she ate baby rice for a week and then wouldn't touch pureed stuff again. She reached over and pinched DD1s sandwich and ate it all up. So from 5 months she has been on normal food - same as DD1. She has never had any tummy issues, is a great eater and also loved her milk still. Maybe he is just bored - does he seem interested in your food - i.e the stuff on yoru plate?

he looks at our plates when were eating, but i puree our stuff up and he wont touch it.
ive tried giving milk before food, but if i take bottle away halfway through, he screams the house down, whereas if i leave it till hes finished his milk, he wont eat anything. it suits him better to eat 1st, then have milk. i know theres no hurry to introduce foods, but my friends kid was a really picky eater because shed left it as the same foods for a while, and baby would only eat those that she was used to. i gave DS2 a lump of cheese tonight and he scoffed the lot, so maybe its the meat he doesnt like.
i have been mashing the banana to a lumpier texture to help him get used to lumps as its his fave, but feel that it cant be good to eat it everyday and would like him to eat more alternatives. i even tried a jar as im sick of making up big batches of food and throwing it away, but he wouldnt have that either.
does anyone have recepies they think he might like?

maybe he is not eating as he wants to finish his bottle?

there is no reason he will be more fussy if you introduce more foods later....

give milk and give finger foods, and chunks of what you are eating and let him lead the way

he will eat what he wants, and get to enjoy food at his own pace

remember, a lot of babies are only just starting to be weaned at 6 months.... so there really is no need to panic or hurry

dont think hes not eating so he can finish bottle, as if hes eating pureed fruit he sits with his mouth open like a little baby bird, you cant shovel it in quick enough. but wil def try blf and see how it goes, anywqay thaks for all advice, have to go and bath him now as hes falling asleep on my shoulder.

I wouldn't worry. My ds couldn't stand pureed food, full stop, from the offski.

As others have said, follow some of the great advice on here about BLW, and put the blender away!

Actually, just to add something. I had to give DD the bottle b4 food as she wasn't getting much milk otherwise. But I think the normal advice was to give it after the meal or half and half.

and from a tiny baby (once I stopped bf at 6 weeks) she would down an 8oz bottle in minutes with no break and a massive burp as soon as she was finished. She never had trapped wind and was rarely sick

A proper little guzzler really. And she's not even fat!!

good luck with the finger food, it sounds like it could be right up your street.

Am trying finger food now, its going quite well, although DS2 can be bit lazy and just sits with his mouth open, waiting for you to stuff something into it! I have discovered that he really loves cheese, so tried adding small amount to the afore mentioned pureed dinners and he wolfed it down! Kid just obviously doesnt like the taste of what he was getting. Bought some rusks, which he loves going to work on, unfortunatley, so does DH!!! Have to buy another bloody packet now .
Anyway, thanks to all who posted advice, esp Aitch for her fantstic blog, gonna recommend it to mums at next playgroup sesh.
