Weaning

10 1/2 month old now refusing to be spoon fed

I've also combined finger foods and spoon feeding for DS2 mainly because he doesnt seem to get that much finger food in and always loved his food so opened his mouth quite happily for the spoon. However, over the past week he is absolutely refusing to let me feed him and is hardly eating anything. He is teething so it could be a minor blip but he is still feeding himself a bit so I think its time to bite the bullet and just let him take over.

My question now is what the hell do I give him for breakfast? I've previously been giving him ready brek and weetibix. I did just give him a bowl of hardish ready brek this morning to see if he would grab it with his fingers but he just tipped the bowl over his head! Any ideas other than toast?

My DS is nearly 10 months and for breakfast I give him cereals he can pick up by himself - Cheerios, Shreddies (although a bit too high in fibre for him), mini Oatibix. He also loves toasted teacakes and crumpets.

I second Crumpets, DD loves them.

I suspect the refusal is the teething issue but also a control issue. By refusing the spoon he has some control over what is happenning. DD went through phases of this, I gave up in the end and sat back and let her do what she could with finger foods. I did find yoghurt was rarely refused though

Have you looked at Aitches blog for finger food suggestions? www.babyledweaning.com

Thanks both. Had completely forgotten about crumpets. He has had them before and loves them. Have also been looking at Aitches blog today for ideas.

I let him get on with it today and he really enjoyed feeding himself so I think he wants to go solo. I cant say I enjoyed the clear up though I have never known a baby make so much mess!

Got some hot x buns for me ds who is 10 months - he loves them. Banana, scotch pankcakes, cheese?

I think at this age it does really matter if they arent having what would be classed as "breakfast" foods for breakfast and such like - as long as they are having something that they like/will eat?

DS would be happy if he ate nothing but banana

My daughter was the same and hated being spoon fed. She finally refused it totally at about 8 months. I gave her bread-based breakfasts for ages - a banana sandwich or similar is tasty and healthy. Also, homemade muffins with blueberries or mashed banana or whatever in them are great. If you don't want to give sugar, a really ripe banana mashed into a one egg cake mixture is pretty sweet for a baby. Cheese on toast was also v popular. Also, hardish bread like baguettes can be dipped in yoghurt or fromage frais or fruit mush.

DD is 7 mths and I make up weetabix with milk and give her the spoon loaded whilst I keep hold of the bowl. She i quite happy getting spoon to mouth and tho it's a messy business she will happily eat a whole one.
