Weaning

Probably done before, but - is she ready to wean?

DD2 was born at 35+3 weeks. I was advised by HV to wean at 4 months due to change in sleep habits and constant BF. I tried two meals of babyrice, but felt that she wasn't ready and stopped. (DD1 weaned at 14 weeks & great eater.)

The more I have read, the more convinced I am that BLW is the way forward.

Now she is 26 weeks. This week I have been allowing her to have some of our food. She avidly watches us eat, and is attempting to swipe food if near enough. When food put in her hand, she attempts to bring it to her mouth with some success, but more often than not drops it en-route.

I have some reservations:

  1. She loves to suck on a chip, for example, but doesn't seem to be able to hold it herself. However, will rock herself backwards and forwards to reach the chip if I hold it, and chews/sucks furiously.

  1. She is nowhere near being able to sit unaided.

  1. She has an extremely weak pincer grasp, although she is trying.

I realise that 26 weeks seems really young in BLW terms anyway, but wondering how much is due to this, or how much due to the fact that actually she is a month behind.

I was just wondering what experienced BLWers thought as to whether it is still too early to be offering solids if she can't actually sit up on her own or bring the food reliably to her mouth.

Does the adage of if she can do it, her guts are ready, stand if born on the early side?

ooh, tough one
I'd keep on giving her the opportunity to pick up food herself but avoid holding it for her - if nothing else it'll get her practising like mad till she can get it in herself.
DD can only sit unsupported if really interested in something by her feet (you know what I mean), and then only for less than a minute, but is BLWing fine imo - sucked the hell out of some pear today...

Hmm, yes I can keep doing that. I suppose I am concerned that she'll be waiting for months because DD1 was quite late to sit unaided, and didn't walk 'till nearly 23 months, etc, so could be another few months before DD2 sits unaided. She does sit really well with a breastfeeding cushion for support, though.
