Switching to blw, after a month or two of purees- I'm sure someone must have done it before me?

Lo is a good eater, he's been on purees for a month or so, and eats almost everything he's given enthusiastically. He now eats for example a whole jar of babyfood at a sitting.

I've also been giving him fingerfoods in the blw way for about a fortnight. Some of them he absolutely scoffs, for example a finger of cathedral city on wholemeal toast today was demolished in under 5 mins with only a small soggy remnant to be found seeking refuge under his chin(s)

But a lot of the fingerfoods he will happily lick/taste but doesn't tuck into. I was thinking about giving up the spoonfeeding and swapping to blw which I think he'd go for as he loves any kind of small step towards independence, but not sure how to do it as he eats a LOT of pureed food every day at the moment, and I don't think he currently has the skills to eat that amount via blw.

I know they should be getting the main part of their nutrition from milk when you start blw, he usually haves about 26oz of milk over three bottles. If I were to just do blw, would I have to add, say, another bottle until he's able to eat enough blw style food to replace the purees? or should I just reduce the puree meals slowly and up the fingerfoods considerably until he's fully doing blw?

By the way, I know I could just combine the two, but theoretically, how would swapping to blw best be done? All advice welcome!

i'd say that you could do a combo of all three, more milk on offer, gradual reduction of purees and upping of finger foods. as snacks as well, so there's plenty of food about. i'm sure it'll be fine. also you could give him a spoon with his mushier food, see what happens...

Aitch, you should get sponsored by Fairy Non-Bio y'know- I'm sure sales have tripled since getting half of MN onto blw!

Yeah that's not such a bad idea, about a combination of all three. I'm not fussed about him being pigeonholed into one particular type of weaning, he's really adaptable (has to be with my indecisive half arsed parenting) the main reason I'm so keen on blw is just so we can all eat our own food in peace! Plus I love that I can hand him a bit of whatever I'm eating when we're out. We had a lovely peaceful lunch the other day in a cafe with lo munching on discs of barely messy at all cucumber. Bliss!

By the way, just wanted to ask... do you think that organix "no junk" carrot sticks (come on, say the word, they're crisps ffs) and moon biscuits etc are ok to give as a snack occasionally? I'm never sure whether to trust the packaging on pre-packaged baby foods. We aren't really doing rusks as I worry about the sugar content, and what's replacing the sugar in the sugar free rusks. Ta x

i liked moon biscuits, in that i didn't like them myself but dd did so they got eaten slowly. lots of people love those carrot sticks but i'm too mean and dd's dad is a crisp fiend so i wanted to delay her introduction to crisps for a bit.

i did this, but did not know it was BLW then, just stopped with the mush as she wasn;t eating, and just gave her bits off my plate.

seemed to suit her just fine!

I don't do BLW but I do only feed my son fingerfoods at lunch time. He then gets snacks through the afternoon and mashed food at dinner.

I started on lunch as I can ensure he eats properly at dinner. I am thinking of starting fingerfoods at dinner soon as he is getting better and better. he is almost 7 months now.
