Would you give your 9 month old food with tomato based jar sauces in???

Making a pasta bake, normally i would keep some ingredients aside and just put a little of plain tinned tomatoes with my 9 month olds.

Can i stop being so cautious now he eats anything pretty much, would Asda tomato and garlic sauce be ok for his pasta or is it too soon. Wondered if it was too much salt, preservatives etc or am i worrying over nothing?

TIA

I would and have done in the past and will again when my ds2 is older. Dont see aproblem when they are eating what the rest of the family eat, but im sure there will be many people disagreeing in the minute!

homemade tomato sauce is sooo easy to make and you can miss out the salt completely (I do)

If you'd rather use ready prepared (very convenient I know), Boots sell jars of Annabel Karmel tomato sauces. I've tried them and have frozen them into portions and keep in a bag in the freezer for emergencies (homemade is much tastier though). I wouldn't feed "adult" based ready meals to small kiddies at all.

not sure on this one. Annabel Karmel does a baby tomato pasta sauce - my dd hates it mind you.

as a one off only the salt would bother me - what does the nutrition information on the jar day. I wouldn't if it was more than 1g salt per 100g.

I give it to my eldest is that really bad then? He is 3.

I know i could make my own but i've 20 mins to get in and cook tea tonight and that is my 'easy quick cook meal'
I wouldn't have given it to DS1 at that age but i'm so more relaxed this time round but obviously don't want to do anything that will harm them. Ds2 now eats sausages that we all have, they'll be salty too won't they. i'm panicing now i've been over salting him.

the government salt website ( yes there really is one) says

High is more than 1.5g salt per 100g (or 0.6g sodium)

Low is 0.3g salt or less per 100g (or 0.1g sodium)

If the amount of salt per 100g is in between these figures, then that is a medium level of salt.

the link to its advise on salt for babies and children is here.

I'd do it as a one off but not regularly but then I'm no paragon of motherhood

Nannyjo,
I Wouldnt worry or panic over a jar of pasta sauce. My ds is 8 now and a very healthy lad!
A jar of pasta sauce aint gonna kill him!

i wouldn't kill myself over that, tbh, but personally i do think pasta sauces are a rip-off and have weirdy ingredients in them. isn't it just as easy to fry an onion, some bacon and garlic and fling over a can of toms? next time, i mean.

personally i'd just make my own tomato sauce. tinned toms or passata, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, chives and bob's your uncle.

Tomatoes, they are so staining.

I think they should make more baby clothes in orange shades.

It doesn't help, NoBiggy. I have loads of orange and brown clothes my dsis sent from the US, but somehow ds is never wearing them when I feed him tomatoey things. Or banana. Or avocado. His clothes look like he lives in a dumper.

you can make home-made baked beans you know.

finely chop onion and fry until soft and golden

add tins toms/passata and heat until bubbling - turn down and leave to simmer for half hour without lid - stir every so often.

drain 450g of tinned pulses or precooked ones (I use 2 tins - kidney or haricot for 'real' baked beans) add and heat through

add chopped corriander if you like.
