8 month old DS loving his BLW, I do offer lots of fruit and veg, but he also loves hummus, cream cheese on toast, pesto, fish meat etc. He's been pretty constipated for a few weeks now, just wondered if anyone had experienced this, and if I ought to be cutting back on the food and keeping his diet simpler. Seems a shame when he's enjoying himself so much! (He also still has several BF's a day and at least one at night.)

Do you give water with meals? This may be the problem if you don't.

Apricots are normally a fairly effective shifter of poo in my experience. Or grapes

I used to give DS1 diluted prune juice to help him out - he absolutely loved it.

I do offer water, which he throws around, pours down his front etc....will keep offering it in the hope that he sees the light soon!

I'd also try apricots, grapes and 'little oranges' such as clementines or mandarins. At that age, I did restrict the number of bananas which DS ate to half a one every other day or so as he was prone to being bunged up too (he was also bf till 20 months). Don't reduce the range he eats - it's what makes food interesting, both for you and him.

Haven't tried the prune juice yet, although I have been spoon feeding him some pureed prune (not very BLW friendly but needs must!)which I think has helped a bit. Just wondering how common this is as to be honest my GP doesn't seem to have a clue about diet and has just prescribed lactulose which DS is not keen on taking.

Exactly pigeonpie - thanks! I was worrying that it was too much too soon, but he's having so much fun with it that it seems wrong to cut it all back. Will try grapes as he's now getting pretty good with the old pincer grip.

Just remembered, I started to give DS a prune chopped up into smallish bits with his breakfast he could pick up which has helped too. He's now 2.2 and still has a couple with his pear at breakfast time - they usually disappear first!

Thanks. I would have thought anyway, that if his guts were getting a bit irritated by new foods he'd have diaorrhoea wouldn't he, rather than constipation....what do I know though!

Help! Have just started weaning DS, meant to go for BLW but somehow have started with purees/ mush.

After reading this and other threads I am planning to undo this starting tomorrow but in the meantime, I need some reassurance.

DS is bf and started "solids" at 5.5m. Before he was pretty regular with his poos, which were v runny. From first banana mouthful he has had formed, squishy but not exactly loose poos (sorry for the level of detail) every day. He does grunt lots before they appear. Do you think this means he is constipated? Should I worry? I know other people's posts make this seem so insignificant.

Have started to give water. What do you mean by "a prune" - a dried prune? Have to confess to never having bought prunes before!

Any advice appreciated.

this happened to my ds about that age and actually i think he just wasn't getting enough fluid, he hadn't taken a bottle til that point but then i managed to get him to take one and suddenly he wasn't constipated any more, thinking back on it i guess i was cutting down on feeds and maybe he wasn't getting quite enough fluid.like your LO he used to just chuck water around..
just a thought

mungosmum - buy tinned prunes in syrup or apple juice, they are lovely and soft and sweet, my ds LOVES them!

Thanks fairylights, I'll try that today.

i just get the ready to eat ones. bananas are notorious for causing constipation as well, so maybe give them a miss for a while?
