it is touted as a good first weaning food as it is gluten free, but it is tasteless mush, it is a good thickener for purees however. if you are starting weaning at 26 weeks, you can start on finger foods, 'real' food, straight away....BLW

Nope it is great for thicknening food up when they are more into lumpyer/thicker consistancy foods. I still have some on the cupboard and DD2 is 9 months. However DD1 & 2 didn't like it plain so I added some fruit pureed to it.

Cereals are fine for all ages and a necessary food. You don't need to buy baby rice, just buy normal ground rice, or even proper rice cooked till it's very soft. You can also vary with pasta, cous cous, millet (grains or flakes), quinoa, porridge etc. etc. At 6mo a baby can eat pretty much everything as long as it's salt free, and they don't need "baby" food per se, a lot of it is over-priced rubbish anyway and often contains salt and sugar.

It makes a very effective constipator, especially when combined with banana! Agree with all previous posts.

I'm going to stick up for baby rice. (ducks to avoid things being thrown). We started our DD on it on the advice of our HV as being an ideal first food, and it has been great. DD loved it plain at first, and now loves it mixed with apple or pear puree as a dessert. We won't use it forever, but it was a useful breakfast and is a useful dessert as we slowly introduce other foods. I get an organic wholegrain version for only £1 a box.

personally, I think the fact that it is tasteless is what makes it a good first food. Think about how strange it must be for your baby to suddenly have a spoon thrust towards her mouth when s/he is used to getting food from a breast or bottle. Isn't is good if what is on that spoon doesn't taste any different to what they're used to (assuming that you make it up with their usual milk)?

ds and also dd when she was a baby go thru phases of being off their milk ie only drinking a few ounces at a time, which can be really frustrating! the only useful thing a health visitor has ever said to me is this: you can up their milk intake enormously by making up thick baby rice. ie ds drinks 3 oz from a bottle and the other 4 oz i make baby rice with mash banana, or with sweet potato and lamb, or whatever.
he has pasta, normal rice and loves couscous. but these you can't really mix with the milk in the same way. so i'm still a baby rice fan and he's 8 1/2 months! you can get organic wholegrain version and it's just over £1 a box, which lasts us about a week or so.
