Weaning

New to weaning - baby hates everything

I know it's early days but I could do with a little advice.

We started weaning at the weekend and my ds's first food was banana. I tried a little BLW and gave it to him to feed himself. He had a bit of a suck and his little face screwed up in disgust/WTF-ness, and his eyes did that twitchy thing as if he'd eaten something really sour.

So....I thought, maybe it's too tart for his little palate so I switched to mush - pureed pear mixed with some breast milk. More of the same screwed up face but not the twitchy eye thing. Since then we've tried carrot (really hated), sweet potato (really hated) and normal potato (fair to middling hated). It was all mixed with my milk.

We've tried 5 different things in 6 days now and it feels like a lot, but I don't want to force stuff on him if he doesn't like it.

Do I keep trying with the same foods on consecutive days to try and get him used to it, or should I try another taste completely?

Have you tried a bit of toast? Was the only thing my LO would eat for a while... I got really despondent as bowl after bowl of my lovingly prepared food went in the bin, and he's only just started taking in half-decent amounts in the last week (he's 8mo). Philadelphia on toast was my banker for ages.

No, we haven't tried any toast yet - will give that a go. Thanks Meg.

My nephew did the same, my sister tried everything and all he did was pull the most outrageous screwed-up revolted face. He just wasn't interested in solids at all till he was 4 or 5 weeks older - now he eats anything in sight!

A friend of mine said that it took 7 tastings of anything for ds to accept a new food - based on this you need to just persevere - sorry!

Ooh, thanks for the link Aitch - that's really quite a Eureka Moment for me as am used to talking to people who's babies shovelled everything down with gusto from the word go.

I did have limited success with banana the second time round - first I mashed it with A LOT of milk, and then I gave him a piece to eat on his own and it seemed to be more acceptable to him.

I think I'll try carrot again today.

there is a case to be made that if everything is made with milk than it's more palatable because that's what they're used to, i think.
if you look at jars of baby food you'll see that things like ratatouille have milk powder added but i just couldn't be bothered with the faff and also the thought of what might happen when we unblanded her food, iykwim?

rASRED SWEET POTATO WEDGES ARE AN ideal FIRSst food, because the smush in the baby's mouth, are very healthy abd quite sweeyt

maybe wait a week and try again? Or on't do it every day, but every other day, so it's not such a big deal...

dont know if this goes against the BLW manifesto but my first thought was maybe your DC is a bit overwhelmed? I started with baby rice and gave DD1 that for about 3 weeks before introducing cooked apple. I went very very slowly. DD2 didnt seem to actually swallow anything till a month after i started giving her tastes of things.
