8 month old vomits anything not super-pureed. Normal?

I feel like my 8 month-old baby is way behind all the BLW super-stars out there. Should I just keep trying to feed him chunkier food and let him get over throwing it all up, or stick to the liquidy purees indefinitely? Is he telling me that he is not ready, or should I be telling him that he should be?

Any advice would be appreciated.

My dd did this with lumps to start with (she would gag and vomit entire stomach contents) but loved purees - just keep trying every few days or so and he will get the hang of it eventually. Dd now (at 9.5 mths) much keener on finger food than mush.

my dt's were like this - on puree's for what seemed like forever (i think over 1? can't rigthly remember). one of them had and still has a strong gag reflex, so any hint of a lump and he would bring everything back (well it looked like all of his dinner). So i just stuck with purees and introduced toast fingers, breadsticks, finger food basically as i found, if they fed themselves they knew to chew, whereas if it was fed on a spoon they assumed they could swallow without chewing....

So i guess i did 50/50 BLW, i spooned puree in while they ate other stuff with their fingers so that i knew they were getting enough....then i let them feed themselves their purees, then i started mashing, then i just cut up (a lot of their weaning was done at nursery too, so they learned by watching other kids eat).

OK, thanks this is really helpful. When can I introduce something like breadsticks/fingers?

you say you 'feed him chunkier food' which he then throws up. do you mean food on a spoon that's not fully pureed, like you've left it a bit chunky? or do you mean something chunky and solid like a pear or peach? sometimes the throwing up is because a baby is sucking the food off the spoon and it goes to the back of the throat causing a gagging and then throwing up. on the other hand with food he is controlling himself, like a pear, there is no spoon, he takes as much as he wants and can better control it. does that make sense?

ruddynorah, yes thats what i found, if they handled it themselves then yes they bit off what they wanted and chewed it (it didn't help that they didn't get teeth til 17 months), but anything on the spoon got sucked and swallowed whole.

phdiva, try toast now, butter it as soon as it's out of the toaster so it melts in and makes it soggy, and then leave some bits on his high chair tray.

Other wise 8 months is not really old for purees, if he's happy and so are you carry on....
