Finger foods for 8 month old.

I have an 8 month old baby boy and i'am really struggling with figuring out what finger foods to give him.

He still has no teeth and no sign of any coming yet and i'am rather paranoid about choking.

He gets on well with bread/toast. But what else can I give him and what he won't choke on?

Thanks in advance...

A bit of whatever you're having? You'd be surprised how well babies can manage with no teeth.

And I'd recommend a first aid course if you are anxious about choking.

We did BLW with our DD from 6 months and she's 22 months now. She gagged a few times but never choked. She loved spaghetti bolognese and curries the most, though they are quite soft foods anyway.

Agree that if you’re anxious about choking, a Paediatric First Aid Course is a really goo idea as babies can choke on purees too. There’s a video on the St John’s Ambulance site which should be helpful too.

When I was stuck for ideas, I got this book from our local Library which really helped.

Things mine love were stuff like eggy bread, cheese on toast, homemade sweet potato wedges, DD loved cut up cherry tomatoes, chunks of cucumber, sandwiches, cheese straws, bits of fruit.

Basically though, anything can be a finger food. Having a roast dinner? Just give LO a roast spud, some veg and a strip of meat. Spag Bol, stick a long sleeved bib on KO and let them eat Smile

Thanks. Can he really have things like chunks of cucumber? They just seem so hard...

Why do you think he can’t? Smile

Because he has no teeth to chew through something hard. Cucumber chunks don't dissolve in the mouth like softer foods.

You can peel the cucumber first if you’re worried but it should be fine. You don’t have to just give soft food at all. You’d be surprised what they can eat without teeth as their gums are quite hard.

Pretty much anything you can think of. Choking is prevented by having tongue control, not by chewing. Mine is 7 months. For breakfast, he had an omelette with halved cherry tomatoes. For dinner he’s having a bit more omelette (made too much), some raw peppers and grated cheese. Cucumber sticks are good. Bagels with cream cheese is a favourite. Rice cakes with hummus. Pasta and cheese. All sorts of fruit.

My 9 month old eats whatever we eat. I chop it all up small so she can pick it up with finger/thumb.
Toast
Tuna
Chicken
Pretty much all veg - broccoli, asparagus , green beans, carrots, mushrooms
Chicken curry
Fajitas
Rice
Pasta
Chilli
Lasagne
