Weaning

changing from breast to bottle

Hi, my son is 8wks old and I want to stop breastfeeding and move onto bottles. I realise I probably can't do this immediately ie all at once, as my boobs will explode! At the moment I bf him 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm (and again at 2/3am if he wakes). He has a bottle at 11pm.
The biggest challenge for me will be getting through the night without breastfeeding as I rely on him to empty my breasts.
How do you give up without being in a lot of discomfort?
I assume pumping isn't really an option because surely that continues to stimulate your milk supply...
Please help.

Tight bra/ vest top then express enough to take the edge off but not too much as like you say you'll keep producing the milk. You can prob do it by hand easily enough as you'll be very full!

If you want to do it more gradually, replace some breast feeds with bottles first them your supply will calm down a bit.

The baby will have to get used to drinking much more milk, so to ease baby into the new volumes and reduce your risk of Mastitis, the current advice is to drop one feed every two weeks. For it was me, I’d pick the 7pm one if your DH is around for a few evening and go out for a walk/gym/movie/friends. Once baby is used to that, choose another to drop, maybe the 7am one so that you and your DH can take it I. Turns to have a lie-in at the weekends Smile

It will be gradual but much better than getting Mastitis Smile
