Weaning ideas.. First tastes.

My dd is 4 months. And have started a tiny bit of weaning...because she's ready. Takes interest in when we eat and is often still hungry by eve, yet wont take any milk.
. So far she's had baby rice, pureed banana, and pureed carrot... She literally had about 3-4 tiny spoons full.

What other ideas. I have just pureed some carrot on own. Broccoli on own and a few mixed. And frozen in tubs.

Would never think I've done it all before. What flavours like cinnamon etc can you add and to what? Any good apps.

4 months is too early, she's not showing signs from what you say. Offer more milk. Baby rice is pureed cardboard rubbish anyway, steer clear.

We started at around 4.5 months and DS really enjoys his little bits of purée. Every baby is different and if you feel she’s ready then go with it. I knew at 4 months my son wasn’t quite there but after a few weeks this changed and so gave it a go. He only has it once a day at this point and normally has the pouches. HiPP do a bananas and baby rice or apple and baby rice. Ella’s kitchen also have a few mixed with baby rice too. I believe you are supposed to offer vegetables first so they don’t get too used to sweet tastes? And to offer one type for a few days to know if they have a reaction. I’m sure you can try almost anything, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, apple etc. Once we reach closer to 6 months I will do a combination of spoon feeding and blw. Good luck :)

Breast milk or formula is all babies need until 6 months, and certainly no need for pouches or jars, make your own.

Babies take interest in everything you do but they aren't ready to drive a car or use a knife.

They are ready if they can sit up with support, pick up food and put it in their mouth, chew and swallow, with no tongue thrust reflex.

How do you know she's still hungry if she won't drink milk?

She had Eight x 7oz bottles.. Tried bigger bottles or an extra one and she don't want and spits it out.
She weights 12lb. At 4 month.
Hv said its 'guidelines' of 6m..however to try her and she loves it. But only had literally a couple of spoons full.
My son was the same age too.

Only thing I'd tried was the rice from a packet as MIL brought it.
Everything else i would make.. Just wanted ideas.

When I weaned my DD she weighed 21lbs. At 6 months.

If she doesn't want milk, she isn't hungry. And no reputable midwife would tell you to wean at 4 months if there are no indications of it being necessary.

My ds was 21lb when he was weaned at 23 weeks so 12lb is not heavy at all

Weaning age advice changes loads over time; it’s up to you when to start.

I think we found butternut squash and sweet potato mush went down well as first tastes.

If she’s hungry then milk has more calories than food

6 months is the guideline because there are signs you can’t see like her gut being mature enough to cope with foods beyond milk. You can’t guess that from her being interested in food

But if you’re going to continue then use veg not fruit (too sweet and it makes it harder for them to learn to enjoy savoury foods afterwards) and avoid baby rice like the plague

We started at 5 months and DD liked sweetish veg like carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash. She could not be doing with things like broccoli and spinach, even though we offered them in the early weeks of weaning. She would eat all types of puréed fruit offered and still has a very sweet tooth.

At 22 months, broccoli is still thrown on the floor in disgust...

Forgot to say, I loosely followed the book 'Feeding your baby day by day' by Fiona Wilcock and found it very straightforward. I was a novice cook before DD was born but that book was a godsend in increasing my confidence

Please don't pay attention to all the negative know it alls. Yes the guidelines say to start at 6 months but you know your baby best. Ella's and hipp have some recipes on their website x
