BLW - what was your first food?

theUrbanDryad · 06/05/2007 09:31

what was the first food you gave with BLW??

i'm not thinking of starting just yet (ds is only 4 months) but he has started to grab for food and spoons. i want to BLW, so i won't start until he can sit up at the very earliest, and then i'll offer him something and see if he can pick it up, swallow, etc etc. the thing is, i'm wondering what to give? obviously it needs to be something solid, so baby rice is out, but i wanted it to be something quite bland (he's had a go at an apple i was eating and had a very odd expression on his little face!) but still edible. i'm really confused!

help!!

DS2 helped himself to some of my jam sandwich several week ago!
Decided from then that he'd rather have what we ate. Rarely has 'baby' food now. He's 8.5mths.

here

incidentally apple isn't one of the recommended foods as it has sharp edges I think

dd was 4m old too. We tried baby rice and she spat it out straight away so we try mixed vegs and she scoffed it down - yum yum yum!!!

aDad · 06/05/2007 09:55

dd2 is only one month into it but things she likes so far are:

baby corn
cucumber
banana (sometimes becomes face-cream or 'ear plugs'!)
pear
rice cakes
toast

wow just got on to this thread never heard of blw before but sounds fab. my dd2 is 10 months old but she was 11 weeks early and has been on solids for some time, just starting to chew and is bf all her drinks. i've been trying her with small pieces of pasta (the ones from boots) but she doesn't have a pincer grip still, when do babies get this. we think she might have a slight squint as well, would this delay the pincer grip?

Report
theUrbanDryad · 06/05/2007 10:05

KK - a squint might mean a lack of depth perception, is that what you meant?

thanks for all the advice...like i said, we're not going to start just yet but i like to be prepared!

btw - i didn't let him try the apple, i was eating one in front of him and not paying attention, and turned around to find him licking and gumming it!!

i think we started off with fresh apricot, because her father was eating one and she rather launched herself at it. apat from that, carrot is good. pear also, but it stains like buggery for some reason.

aDad · 06/05/2007 10:09

dont worry I presumed that about the apple! And tbh i wouldn't judge anyway...

kk i dont know the answer to your questions, sorry

Report
AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2007 10:10

kk, i sometimes wonder if BLW babies get their pincer grip a wee bit earlier (because they do seem to) precisely because they are allowed to pick more things up, iykwim? why don't you give her a try with some fusilli (penne and conchiglie are a bit tricky starting off, but great later on) and see how she gets on. we went through a stage of adding frozen peas to loads of her meals, partly for the vitamins and partly cos they cool things down really quickly. pasta, pesto and peas is still her favourite meal.

Pear was a real winner, but it's been a wee while since I did all this kind of thing.

carrots and rice cakes were a big favourite

Report
AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2007 10:30

and rice cakes, yes. actually dh has just pointed out that dd had difficulty holding onto pear for a while.

BLW was very much a fun, messy way to introduce a variety of foods and certainly had benefits regarding honing co-ordination skills

We have just started blw and after a bit of a rocky start we are getting there. I too started with pear and this was a mistake. Poor little thing chased the pieces around and when he did manage to get hold of them dropped them! I have found the best things so far to be brocolli, banana and cucumber. Having said that I havent tried anything like rice cakes or toast because I am starting very slowly.

i have tried with success banana, melon, mango, avocado (particularly good), sweet potato, toast or bread with butter or cream cheese, croissant, chips, penne with tomato sauce or pesto, babybel cheese, broccoli, roast chicken, beefburger, pizza ...i've found my 8 month old will try anything if he can pick it up himself but is fussy with what he is spoonfed. and i know i should not admit this but if offered he will eat sweet things with special gusto ( it is hard to resist watching him wolf birthday cake)i'd say if you are keen on he idea just put anything soft and unsalty you are eating in front of them in a small piece and see what transpires.

First we tried - various batons of steamed veg.

First she ate - cheese on toast

Sign of things to come!

DD (now 8 months) eats mostly meat, and everything in sight.

Officially, sweet potato. Unofficially, she'd had a good go at cucumber and steamed carrot before that.

The first major success, I'd say, was melon.

Incidentally, I'm feeling rather clever about the sandwiches I made for dd. I made a slice of toast (sliced bread). Cut it into 4 on the diagonals, then cut into each piece, much as you'd cut into a bread roll. Then spread some Philadelphia inside and pressed the slice shut again. Bingo, small, tidy samdwiches that don't fall to pieces.

Cat biscuits but that wasn't intentional.

Jacket spud with cheese was our first intended meal. She wolfed it down!

I think ds's was Cucumber and Banana
