My 6 mth DD has been having solids for about 3 weeks now.She has taken to it like a dream and opens her mouth as soon as she can see the pot and spoon. The problem we are having is with really hard poos. She seems to be getting tummy ache but isn't upset when she actually poos. She is refusing water and diluted apple juice.I tried annabel karmel's dried fruit puree but I don't have a mouli and so there was lots of skin in it so I didn't give it to her. The HV suggested putting onto an oat porridge breakfast which i started today, mixed with water and apple puree. She is drinking 4 80z feeds, sometimes taking a 5th 405 oz feed. But I don't know what to do to help her. Don't want to go down lactulose route.I did try diluting feeds by adding extra 1oz of water, but she never finishes the feed.Stopped giving baby rice in case that was the problem.
Any ideas?

Oh bless her, we had exactly the same problem with DS and he wouldn't drink water or juice either although he drinks tons of the stuff now.

My advice is avoid rice, pasta, banana and too much bread and dairy products particularly eggs

I didn't have moulie but used to boil prunes and then blend them and strain them in a sieve. I would add the prunes to all his fruit purees and fromage frais and to his porridge.

hope that helps

A nice massage on tum around her belly button and down in a sort of C shape. And during it you could push her knees gently up to her tum. Massage teach told me this for dd and it worked a treat.

Plenty of fruit and veg - start as you mean her to go on!

We also used to sit DS on a potty when we could see him straining as it seemed a more productive position as it were! Actually in the end Dh had to deal with it as i could bear to watch

That often happens when they start on solids, try a bit of fruit puree mixed in with the porridge. Plus it tastes better

My baby is at pretty much the same stage and also loves his food (just like his mum he he) ... he won't drink more than half oz of water at a solid feed and we were having the same problem. I gave him dried apricot puree (there did not seem to be a lot of skin when I hand blended it) which i mix up with a little milk and water - he yums it up as the fruit is quite caramelised after being boiled and it seems to have really helped. I also started thinning out pureed veg with a bit of water rather than milk and generally he's fine now. I suppose it could just be something that happens whilst there body gets used to the food?

would suggets the book 'what should i feed my baby' by suzanne Olivier. it's very good about when to introduce certain food groups.

my ds2 was older when he became constipated for no good reason (diet was fine - plenty of veg and fruit) and would still poo daily but it was so so painful. I'd stopped breast feeding by that stage and i put him on goats milk - know not advised at 6 months but i mention this as if yours is on a cow milk formula rather than being bf you can get non-cows milk formula and this would be worth looking at as the protein size of cow milk can make very hard poos. things improved and he can now have cows milk.
good luck.

I read this the other day and made my own apple and prune puree and it worked! 2 apples and a tablespoon of prunes bolied up made about 6 portions. It tastes a bit tart so I put in a bit of orange juice to sweeten it a bit.
