He may have learned a lesson there. next time he will be more careful with banana.

just give him a big piece of banana rather than chip shaped in future, although you may have to leave the skin on the ends so that he can hold it. i don't think you did anything wrong at all, like colditz said he's learning how to gag and control food in his mouth so it's just a learning curve they go through.

as for the mucousy vomit, i have rather geekily written about this on the blog here and i personally think it's a clever thing their body does to lubricate food that gets a wee bit too stuck. amazing, huh? (of course it's speculation on my part, but the only time the mucus came up was when she did a bad gag. like, twice in total or something.)

as for the worrying... nothing you can do about that. you know he managed fine first time round, his body did everything it was supposed to do, but i think it's your job as a mother to worry so your stuck with it...

jetjets, I've been BLW for a month now & it's amazing I was supposed to be heading the way of purees as we did with DD 2 years ago but DS refused sppon & puree so out of desperation gave him a rice cake...he threw up but I didn't panic. I then gave him a banana to hold (a whole one rather than part of (echo waht Aitch says about bigger pieces rather than cut into small ones) & he ate it with no problem! We then moved on to broccoli florets, sweetcorn, pear, apricots, mango, melon, chicken etc. He's nearly 32 weeks & he seems to be coping rather well. We've only ever had one gagging moment since the rice cake but I didn't panic just talked to him & he soon worked it out...i.e didn't stuff too much in the next time! He has only just cut one tooth but I'm so amazed at the power of his gums!....keep going it's so worth it, especially when you can all sit down together & eat the same stuff...at nursery they cannot believe how he eats all by himself..I'm still unsure of how much he is getting down (the mess on the floor is unbearable at times!!) but I only to see inside his nappy to realise that he is digesting something..... !

My DD gagged first time too - three weeks later, well last Sunday she had roast beef, yorkshire puds, roast potatos, green beans and carrots and you should see her with the spag bol!

Try again tomorrow, slap a big false smile on your face and remember that gagging is part of learning to swallow.

DS shared half a marmite bagel with his big sister this morning He has however, taken the spoon the past couple of days for weetabix / yoghurt & some tomatoe sauce that I'd made with his pasta (which he ate by himself!!).....he had some sausage at nursery yday..
