Ready to wean?

Dh wants us to start weaning 5.5mo ds2, but he has not yet appeared the slightest bit interested in solids. He certainly doesn't do the watching food go from our plates to our mouths thing. I can't remember any other signs of readiness for solids - any clues?

They'll watch everything with interest.Tell him to scratch his testicles in front of her.
That will cause similar interest.

6 months or above is the biggest clue
It's only a few more weeks and you'll be amazed how much more interested DS will be in the coming weeks

We weaned dd at 5.5m, she showed only two of those signs (thanks, MrsB - good old Kellymom again!) but absolutely adored solids and took to them immediately. Ds2 is not a good sleeper (unlike our other two LOs) and that, together with the fact that we weaned dd at 5.5m, is why dh wants to wean him.

What's so magical about 6m? Why do WHO recommend that age?

it's the time at which the gut is most likely mature enough to handle non-milk food

I remember (not that I remember much these days, see earlier reference to non-sleeping infant) that 6 years ago I was told ds1 had to be eating a varied diet and 3 meals a day by 6m, in order for him to have enough iron in his diet. Clearly that's not the opinion now. I think I'll have to come back to the Kellymom site earlier in the day, when perhaps I won't be quite so zonked, and therefore have a bit more capacity for comprehension.

I was told very similar with my ds (now 7) but this time round so much had changed!

Like you i was interested to know why it had changed so read up about it and asked on forums. I then came across baby led weaning. The whole concept sounded much easier to me so we went with it!

Contrary to popular belief, starting solids does not make a non-sleeping baby sleep through.

If he's not interested then like pp said you'd be wasting time and lovingly prepared food lol

If you are interested in more about Baby Led Weaning, I have a diary and with lots of links and research
on it.

BLW is a sure fire way of finding out if your baby is ready or not... if he is, he eats

Hope that helps x
