you lot must get sick of these 1st time mums..

DS is 6 months next week. Been happily eating purees for a month, veg, fruits, rice, oats and buckwheat (plus bf).

So I'm thinking 6 months means he can start to have some protein. thought of giving lentil and veg, and also tuna, but he has no teeth and worried about choking, should I puree the tuna or just mash it up with a fork?

Also, can he have tomato (no allergies in family and we all love tomato), and can he have yoghurt, and what about cheddar cheese, cos wouldn't it be too salty?

Any tips gratefully received!

at 6 months i chucked everything in my DS's general direction and discovered he was allergic to peppers and strawberries at the same time

yes cheese is salty so limit it (but DS loves cheese on toast)
Tomato - not sure why there would be an issue
flake the tuna so your DS can pick it up (get the stuff in spring water)
Why not cod or salmon which when cooked flakes beautifully
strips of chicken, or quorn pieces are good

ypghurt is fine - i gave DS yoghurt - greek or natural live yoghurt is nice

yoghurt is fine. best get a plain natural yoghurt though, not one especially for kids which often has sugar and things added.

cheese is fine, take care with salt content yes, but lots of goodness in cheese so i don't worry too much about it. dd has cheese every day.

tomato, again, probably fine. some people stick to cooked tomato to start off with. the 'issue' with tomato is that some people are allergic to the family of fruits they are in. this can mean a rash or anything more serious. up to you if you introduce it. if you don't then you won't know. FWIW, dd doesn't have raw tomatoes, but she has it in pasta sauce, red pesto etc.

tuna, fine. yes go with the one in spring water, or maybe in olive oil. not tuna in brine..too salty. no need to puree it really, just present it in a sandwich or on toast. cheese and tuna toasties are nice.

doesn't matter about teeth, they chew without them.

If you are happy with mushy stuff try Annabel Karmel's "lovely lentils" ds couldn't get enough of them at your ds' age. Cod in parsley sauce or salmon in chive sauce went down well too. All 3 things I've suggested can be totally pureed, blitzed a bit or just mashed depending on what you prefer.

I think tuna has added salt doesn't it? could be wrong. My dd has tomatoes and loves them.I take the skin off and cut into quarters, and she
chomps away.
She has cheese too,but only sparingly, coz it is salty.i gave her some pieces of extra mature today, and her little face was a picture. As you can imagine, she wasn't impressed
She's my third ,but it's first time i've done B.L.W.,so I feel like a F.T.M. too

dd, reared on extra mature, pulls a similar face if you give her mild cheddar redbeki. looks like we won't be coming round to each others' houses for cheese sarnies then.

I think she'll have to get used to it aitch, coz we don't do mild

thanks for all your tips! I'm trying him with a lentil and carrot stew today, so we'll see how that goes.

However, I'm very reluctant to cut down his milk as it suggests in the book, as he's happy to drink all his milk and then eat quite a lot of solids as well..

i think your instinct is right there... i never cut back on milk, just waited til dd started to. good luck with the stew.

Thanks Aitch..

I think you're right, actually he is taking a bit less milk as he's getting more interested in food; however I tend to mix it in with his porridge or whatever (in fact I just squirt it from the boob into his bowl, MIL coming to visit next week so may have to retire somewhere to do it!!), to make sure he gets a good dollop of milk.

He loved the lentils! Actually he's liked everything so far except kiwi, and I tried it myself and found it a bit sour...

It's at an odd stage because he can't quite have exactly what we do, yet I want him to have plenty of variety, and I don't want to freeze stuff in case it loses vits (perfectionist first time mum), so I'm making different lots of fruit and veg seemingly all the time!

Might try a bit of tuna and runny mashed pots tomorrow..we're a bit limited with food cos in Central Asia, but veg is very good, meat and fish somewhat dodgy..

anyway thanks for your comments!

I know I don't have to say to you to cut up any cherry tomatoes right? I saw a mother giving her one year old whole ones the other day at the park so I thought I would say.

yes; in fact he's only having puree at the mo, will move on to mash soon but take things slowly... he's 6 months tomorrow and has had veg and cereals (not wheat) for the past month, otherwise is bf...

My cousin had a very scary incident with a licquorice allsort and her 3 year old DS, so gave me a big lecture about choking and cutting up grapes, tomatoes etc.. It is terrifying; I can't help thinking he could easily choke on anything!
