Weaning

9 month old off his milk

DS is 9 months and we started weaning at 6 months. From the start he took to weaning very easily and we were on 3 meals by 7 months, however he still maintained his milk.

Recently he hasn't been having very much milk and doesn't really seem interested in his mid morning or afternoon bottles. He still has one feed overnight, around 2am, and I've kept this up because I was worried he wasn't getting enough during the day.

This is what he had yesterday:

7am milk - 6oz
8am breakfast - porridge with blueberries and banana. Toast with peanut butter. Pieces of kiwi.
9-10.30 nap
11am milk - only took around 3oz
12 - lunch. Shared my jacket potato, beans and cheese, ate quite a lot. Yoghurt and slices of peach.
1.30-3pm - nap
3pm - milk, around 4oz
5pm - dinner. Feed himself some cheese while I got dinner ready. Pasta with chicken and butternut squash. Yoghurt and raspberries.
7pm - milk 6oz and bed.
Took around 5oz at 2am.

Does this sound about right for 9 months. He's on the 90th for weight and I'm not used to him not downing 7-8oz bottles anymore. He has plenty of dairy throughout the day but still seems to want that 2am bottle Hmm

The minimum they need until they are one is 20 floz and he's getting more than that. I wouldn't introduce anymore solids till he's nearer one though Smile

Both mine went off their milk at 9 months and I forged on trying everything. It eventually picked up but not with much enthusiasm. I read years later that babies naturally self wean at 9 months and it's a mistake to try to over-ride it. After all, we are the only species that drinks milk after weaning, and from another mammal at that. Some may argue that it's not natural and this is just baby's way.
As a caveat, as long as they're getting the current recommended amount and plenty of fluids and calcium, I wouldn't worry.

Thank you, I thought the recommended amount was around 20oz.

Luckily he still gobbles down his morning and bedtime bottles. Too much going on during the day and would rather be feeding himself Grin

I was like you a month ago (DS is almost 10mo). He was taking several smaller bottles per day and waking for night feeds occasionally, which, until weaning, he hadn't done since about four months old. I was unsure about whether to feed him or give him a bottle much of the time and TBH I was getting frustrated and wasting a lot of milk.

So I just decided to cut the bottles down. 3 per day - one at 8:30am when he wakes, one at 1pm, and one at bedtime (9pm). I offer 8oz each time and generally he takes the full bottle now (if he doesn't I add a few ounces to his food later). He gets solids at about 9:30am, about 2pm and about 6pm, with a few snacks if he seems hungry.

It's worked an absolute treat and I feel like we've really turned a corner with solids as well since I adopted this routine. He's sleeping through again - this happened almost immediately - and he's putting on weight too.
