Confused about milk/food ratio for my (almost) 9 mo

Can someone clarify just how much milk my 8.5 mo should be having?? books i have read suggest she should be down to one large bottle a day, but also note the 'before one food is for fun' mantra. which is it? at the moment she has around 2.5 bottles a day (and during night unfortunately) and i'm loathe to reduce this massively without being sure she is getting enough calories from elsewhere. like most new crawlers she's all over the place and has too much to do of a day to be bothered with sitting still for long periods to eat. breakfast is generally a non-starter, lunch can be hit and miss, as can dinner, the only food i can generally guarantee she'll eat is fruit - bananas, grapes, plums - but the carb content in these are serving her immediate energy needs and not addressing the 'building' requirement. which is where the milk comes in. the hv says i need to get her out of the feeding at night habit by giving her more food during the day. very easy to say, not so easy to do. at the moment she is bang on the 50th percentile so i worry that any major changes to her diet may result in her slipping below this.
can anyone advise please.

My ds has had two bottles since about 9 mo - 6oz first thing in the morning and 8oz at bedtime. Don't see why you have to get them off the milk at bedtime at such an early age, but I haven't read up on this point. I'm just (possibly naively) assuming ds will cut back on his milk in his own time!!

I know I read that from 12 months to 24 months the milk consumption should be between 12oz and 20oz, if that helps...

My ds is also nearly 9 months old. I make up 3 7-8oz bottles a day with SMA Progress and 1 3oz bottle. He has a bottle at 7.30 am and breakfast, eg Weetabix, Ready Brek, using the 3oz bottle. At 11.30am he has carbs, ie macaroni cheese, and fruit. At 2.30pm he has a bottle, 5pm protein, eg chicken casserole, fruit, and at 6.30pm he has a bottle. Thankfully nothing during the night. He went from 75th percentile to 50th percentile after he started crawling so my HV told me to up his carbs. I think they need 20-24oz a day of formula and as ds doesn't always drink bottles using formula on his breakfast is another way to get the daily amount up.

I hope this helps.

Sorry - inadvertently misled you. Ds also has a yogurt so he has more than 12oz of formula/dairy per day.

cripes,, i think i should just bin all my baby books!!! only bought the blummen things cos my sil (who was preg at the time) told me they were essential! i think we're doing just fine by the sounds of it. i agree with you mumpbump that she will most likely self-regulate. i am trying to water her night feed down to try and deter her from crying out for it (all bit a tiring for this preg lady), but beyond that i think i'll follow her lead. thanks for the advice.

Recommendation is a pint a day (20oz) until they are one.

At this age, I've been told they need 17-20oz a day. My ds (almost 9 months) has 4oz in the morning 5oz in the afternoon and 6-7oz at bedtime. He also has milk on his cereal, yoghurt and cheese in his diet.

Checked up and the book I have suggests between 18oz and 24 oz milk a day for under 1 year old...

sorry to hijack the thread but Im also having problems.miniboden is 8.5 m and was until a week ago having 3- 4 bottles a day - baoyt 21 oz in total & eating 3 good meals. the lastfew days she will only take 3 oz at a time (apart from 8 at bedtime thank goodness) even after sleeping all night she is just not interested in food or drink. Have tried feeding her in every environemnt I can think of to no avail. happy in herself etc but she is only on teh 25th centile as it is. rfuses all purees & not interested much in finger food either.

bb - if she's just been like it for a few days then she might be sickening for something, or just teething. I'd try not to worry unless it lasts for a couple of weeks or more.
