10 month DD refusing her purees

DD has been weaning since 6mo. At first it was great - she loved it. Then she got sick and started to refuse some purees, but would still eat her favourites. Got sick again along with teething and started to refuse even her favourites.

She loves feeding herself, so (and also because of her age) I have been trying to give her more finger foods, but I have been struggling to give her things she will eat. We have tried among other things banana (loves), cheese( not interested), bread/toast (hit and miss) salmon (miss), rice cakes (loves), juicy pear(loves), broccoli (not really impressed).

She has been waking several times a night and I am working full time so I am tired and am struggling to think of what to try next. I was thinking chicken, more veg and some of whatever we are eating.

She is breast fed and refuses a bottle, but that's a whole other thread..

Any suggestions/advice will be gratefully received!

Just do baby led weaning. So much easier. She'll explore/eat at her own pace. 'Food is for fun until one' as they say. It's very unlikely her sleep is being affected by solids at this age as they still get most their nutrition from breast milk/ formula.

I was thinking that - can you just switch and stop the purees? That's a stupid question I guess - we aren't getting anywhere with purees anyway!!

What foods are good to start with BLW?

She really doesn't need food purées at 10 months - I didn't do full on BLW but at 10 months my DS was just eating our normal food mashed up a bit.

Yes you can just stop the purée

She will pick it up pretty quickly

Will she have baby rice and breast milk?

If so, the you can very slowly introduce flavour variance by putting 1 part puree to 3 parts baby rice/ milk.

I read something about a food needing to be represented to a child at least three times before they could start to assess if they like it. First time its a complete shock, second a shock with some memory, third the shock factor has gone so they actually start to consider it.

Just start giving her whatever your eating (less salty/spicy etc) and she will start eating.

Dd LOVED her purées. For a glorious 4 weeks. Then literally nothing passed her lips. I panicked. She went back to breastfeeding every 45 mins round the clock (I'm NOT exaggerating) until I saw a woman at the hospital due to weight loss and dd going limp.
Woman gave her a digestive. Dd are it all.

Toast, cheese, cucumber. Pepper, carrot, lasagne, pasta, chips, sweet potato chips/fingers.
Peas, chopped tomatoes, crackers, rice cakes.....

She'll learn. 10 months is old enough. And water at night. She'll stop waking when she realises she isn't getting what she wants this didn't work for me cos I'm soft but it did for my nephews

We just give ours a small portion of whatever we're eating. It's the easiest thing to do.

Ooo this has just happened with DS also 10 months. I've gone to mostly finger food and half a pouch of puree spooned in when he's ~putting it in his hair~ in between bites.
Am a bit nervous about calorie intake but have read lots of BLW for reassurance 😊

You can definitely stop the purees. Some children just want to feed themselves, they're very independently minded little things.

As far as foods - most things go as long as they're age appropriate and soft enough (i.e. no apple yet) I tended to let DC2 serve herself my plate, she would take what she wanted in her little fists and put it triumphantly on her plate. She only ever wanted what I was eating anyway so it just seemed easier. That way she would eat lots of veg and a little protein.

She wanted her own pots of yoghurt though. No sharing allowed.

It did get a bit dull eating food with no seasoning and mainly in stick shapes but it didn't last too long in hindsight. Would that work for you?

It's been a while, but if you don't BLW isn't the recommendation lumpy mush at eight months and mashed a bit at ten months? DD would have been unimpressed with puree at ten months - it's one flavour per puree and no texture.

Just wanted to check-you mentioned bottle refusing, is she drinking from a cup? My 10 month old has been very slow to wean, still bf a lot, but he will drink expressed milk from a cup on his own now (introduced at 6 months) which would give you a chance for a break if you're not already doing it...

Kiwi she will drink a bit of water, but is being exceptionally fussy. She can drink from a bottle and occasionally has had a couple of ounces, she just chooses not to!

I am going to keep trying with the cup though - definitely want a break..

I think even if no blw they say from 6 months mash, don't blend.

We did sweet potatoes wedges, baby pasta and sauce, fish poached in milk and mooshed up a bit with grated cheese. Stews, scrambled egg.

Give her what you eat. Let her feed herself. I have 4 excellent eaters. We've only ever cooked one meal and let them choose to eat it or not. They may or may not be hungry. Its fine either way. Meal times are a time to catch up and chat. We don't cook additional meals or alternative meals or fill them up with sugery puddings. We are not desperate for them to eat. The kids are slim and healthy.

At 10 months she's rightly not dependant on food for calories. She has breast milk for that. Give her variety and new foods constantly, give her spicey, give her adult food combinations, give her new recipes that you try.

I find my son is better with the cup when I am not available! Do keep trying, am sure you must be in desperate need of a break! I've found one of the 360 cups really good, he took to it straight away. You're def not alone- I keep thinking I must be doing something wrong that he's not on 3 meals yet and then I rationalise that he's still very little, they're all different and he's healthy and happy...so I must be doing something right!

I agree, she just needs what you're having but you must watch the salt content (less than 1g per day up to 12 months)

Have you seen the BLW cookbook? There are lots of meal ideas in there. Finger food doesn't have to mean individual items of food; it can just mean that they eat whatever is provided with their hands. And you can add cutlery when you think they're ready. DD started trying to use a spoon from about 10 months.

You should stop the purees at this age.
Give her some soup, fine, but also more textured food.
What you're giving her sounds limited. Have you really not tried any other foods?

Also m, with regard to cups, my DD loved doidy cups. They have to be watched closely when they first have them but they're able to use them independently very quickly.

Lweji yes, that was only a sample list, she has had homemade chicken curry where I blitzed the chicken and the past few weeks, I have been trying to give her what we have where possible when we all eat together at home which admitedly isn't often as we both work full time.

I have to provide food for the childminder too, so I am struggling with that Confused Any ideas anyone???

Tea I have just bought a doidy cup, so far she has not shown much interest, but we will keep trying!

Kiwi I am tempted by the 360 cup - if the doidy cup doesn't work, I will probably give it a try.

For the childminder, the easiest option is leftovers from tea the day before. Or the BLW cookbook as some nice alternatives to sandwiches such as cheese and spinach muffins and cheese flapjacks. I make up a batch, freeze and grab one when I need it.
