Dumb question about being 'ready' for weaning

So I know the guideline is six months, and we're broadly encouraged not to jump the gun on that, and certainly not to consider it before your baby can sit up, has good hand-eye coordination etc. But what do you do if your baby still can't sit unaided at 6 months?!

I'm getting ahead of myself as DD is only 5 months, but she hasn't even worked out rolling so I can't see her mastering sitting in the next four weeks! Everything seems to be about not starting early - but are you supposed to wait if they still need support for sitting at the six month mark or do you just go for it?

Would you be able to get her sitting with cushions supporting her? I wouldn't wait past six months as they need to start learning about food. They talk about the window of opportunity, when they're ready to accept food and especially lumpy food that needs chewing.

They just need to be able to sit upright in a high chair. If they slouch forward there is a choking risk.

Most babies can manage this even if sitting unaided on the floor is too advanced.

My HV said not to wait any longer than 6 months. We get back from holiday when DD is 6 months and 4 days and HV was a bit when I said we'd probably wait an extra few days.

If your DD still isn't meeting them at 6 months, I'd come back and post then

Ah! Okay. She'll be grand propped and strapped in a high chair. She can balance herself from waist up with support. Think I may have been getting worked up about 'proper' sitting being necessary as I'm generally preoccupied about milestones at the moment. Poor week thing has been on a three-quarter roll for about a month and just can't seem to kick herself over!

Think my DS rolled once at 7 months, in a kind of "do you want to tick that of your list too?" way.

He was a PFB as well

Don't worry about milestones they all get there in the end! My dd took that long to walk I was going to start lying about her age. My mum was still adamant she was on par with Einstein

Yeah my DD wasn't quite at the Einstein stage for speech but she did manage to wait bloody years only then to come out with a 7 word sentence. Little sod

DD1 was "ready" at just over 5 months - she helped herself to my Cucumber off my lunch followed by lemon muffin in Costa that she grabbed.
Dd2 was closer to 7 months than 6 months. It was tongue control/action that made me delay with her.
Gut instinct is best imo
