Weaning

What to wean a constipated baby?

DD (7mo) is BF and was an infrequent pooer (7-10 days at a time between poos). I started weaning at 5.5 months at which point her poo turned to little hard pellets with lots of straining (for hours - it was horrible) and obvious discomfort.

I changed what I was feeding her and the poos have got slightly easier, still accompanied by a lot of straining but she's going approx every 3 days and they are a bit less hard (still not great but no longer like rabbit droppings).

But I'm now feeding the same stuff over and over again and need to broaden it.

I give her both purée and finger food. I'd especially like to increase the finger food and veg rather than cooked puréed fruit but any suggestions of food that won't bung her up appreciated.

At the moment she gets
Pureed prunes/apricots/peas
Fingers of overcooked asparagus/broccoli
Berries (she loves strawberries)
Occasional spinach/kale blended with a bit of milk and potato (she doesn't like it without the potato so I avoid giving her much of this).
A bit of weetabix with milk.
Occasional lentils (not quite sure if these help her poo or not!)

I avoid bread/rice/porridge/fish/meat/cheese/egg and have now also cut out bananas, apples and carrots.

Thanks

Ps sorry the title doesn't make sense. You'll get the gist Blush

You don't need to avoid all that

Just give a lot of liquid alongside it for now

So give fish with a little rice/ mash potatoe/ and veg. Then watermelon for example. Water at every meal

The only thing I would give less of is bread and bananas. But still give a little to try ( like a small piece once a week)

Give porridge, but make 1/4 oats 3/4 milk.

For my kid that is prone to.constipation the main help is water with every meal. Pears / pear juice if things are getting bad.

As pp said I don't avoid much just take it easy with bananas

If anything I would say she has an allergie to something, maybe the dairy if she has always had it?

Hi. Sorry should have said she gets water with every meal, drinks well, lots of wet nappies so she's not dehydrated.

isthistoonosy thanks I'll add pears to her diet. Do you find them better than prunes/apricots? I give her one or other of them (or both) every day.

Dried figs are great and help with teething. Also dates and prunes. As a warning a combination of all 3 work within a couple of hours so might be worth staying at home!

Yes esp when they were little as easy to cook down to soft glop!

When mine was that little it was night time causing the problem as she sweated and then had constipation the next morning. We had to dress her very cooly even though she felt quite cold.

Oh that's interesting about sweating. She's in a 1 tog sleeping bag as we're in the south so it's quite warm at the moment but I do tend to put her in a full sleep suit under it (put her in a legless bodysuit last night). She'd saturated her nappy and leaked pee through it last night so I doubt she's dehydrated.

I shall add figs to the list. 😄

If you put another nappy over the top of the first one during the night, it will hold the first one on and rarely gets wet. You can then use the over nappy as the morning nappy so its not a wasted nappy.
(nothing to.do with your OP though Wink)

Why have I never worked this out?? I'm on baby no 2 and it has never crossed my mind to do this!

Green beans, avocado and butternut squash might be worth trying to see how she gets on with them. I have a nephew who has had a lot of tummy issues, and none of those have an adverse affect on him.

I can vouch for the butternut squash I think, as it always makes my son do huge super-soft poos.

I thought weetabix wasn't great for constipation though? Bloody stuff always bunged me up a bit anyway! Whereas porridge makes me poo more. Perhaps I am just a weirdo though!

Ground flaxseed added to porridge or a little yoghurt works wonders! Keep up with the prunes too and hopefully you'll get results Grin
