Baby rice and stomach pains?

Hi, I've given my 4 month and 1 week old baby baby rice today. This is the first food I've ever given him other than breast milk. He seemed to enjoy it but about 4 hours later he started really crying . It was the kind of cry which suggests he's in pain. It's been on and off this evening,. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking I've tried the rice too early but the health visitor suggested trying it as he's now taken to waking up every 3 hours during the night. I though he might be ready to move on. I just hope I've not hurt him by giving him the rice but I'm assuming that if I just don't give him any more he will be ok. Any advice?
