Weaning

If your baby eats what you eat... what meals are you making?

DD is nearly 7 months and frankly I'm finding the weaning process a bit of a minefield. I have been trying to make puree's up fresh at every meal time but it's taking forever. I have decided that as I cook everything from scratch with healthy fresh ingredients then there is no reason why I can't purée our meals down for her... right?
So if you feed your baby the same as you then what meals are you cooking? Looking for some ideas please Smile

If you're cooking everything from scratch you probably don't need all that many suggestions.

I did BLW and he didn't eat much til he was nine months, but had lots of milk. From then he just sort of got it. Also I was far too lazy to purée. Risotto was the most obvious easy one but really anything of a stew consistency and nothing especially spicy.

I did find that when he was hungry he was hungry and there was no way he was waiting for me to spend thirty minutes cooking. So anything that could be reheated from dinner the night before was a hit at lunch.

We gave whole foods from 6mo but we weren't pure "blw-ers" as we spoonfed too. Tonight was pasta, meatballs and tomato sauce. At 6mo ds would chew on some pasta and quartered meatballs in his fist then be spoon fed the tomato sauce.

DS I chopped small and spon fed, DD I just fed exactly what we were having. I made an effort in the beginning to cut things into manageable chunks (carrots into batons, fusilli, chunks of brocolli, not too much stuff in gravy) and gradually we've worked upto smaller pieces.

DD's just turned 1 and will eat everything, not discerning in the slightest and wolfed down dinner at MIL's today Confused

Great idea, feeding your baby what you eat. We did that (both BLW and purée) and never bothered to go out of my way to buy kiddie food. So frozen chips, fish fingers, sausages, nuggets and pizza were never in my freezer because it never occurred to me to buy them. They happily ate processed foods at parties though.

All four of mine eat anything homemade - stuffed tomatoes, curries, fish, nut roasts, moussaka, soups, salad etc. We started young and offered lots of variety, always accepting if they didn't want to eat. Never making a fuss.

Just normal family food- I didBLW so no purees- my babies would eat chicken curry and rice, spaghetti bolognese, casseroles, chilli con carne, stir fried noodles etc- just the same as the rest of the family.

Today breakfast was weetabix and mashed banana - I just make one bowl and we share.

Lunch - we're both having chicken soup. I put centimetre cubes of bread in his and spoonfeed him the mushy bread. Fromage frais and pear for afters.

Dinner is bolognese - he has his with the tiny baby pasta shells instead of spaghetti.

Vegetable stir frys, curries, fish, fish cakes, lentil ragu, vegetable bakes, stuffed mushrooms. With a side of veg, pasta, rice, garlic bread, beans, or sweet potato chips.

You really don't need to purée food for a 7 month old baby. Fork mashing will suffice.

At this age DD could hold, and reliably get into her mouth, chip shaped bits of roasted sweet potato, carrot, florets of broccoli etc. I would spoon feed small pasta shapes (conchiglietti is great - mini shells, cheaper than official baby pasta), or bits of mince or mashed potato.

If you cook from scratch just give him some of your food. You can spoon feed the bits that are too small for him to pick up (this isn't blw) and leave bigger bits big enough for him to grab and gnaw at. You might be surprised how much he gets in.

DS is 8.5 months and eats what we eat.

Today we had:
Weetabix and banana - weetabix spoon fed, banana just chucked at him and he got on with it
Hummus sandwich and fruit
Lentil and cheese wedges from the BLW cook book, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower

I tend to pick something from the BLW cookbook for dinner and we all have it. Or a normal dinner like pasta bake/spag bol/chilli/casserole.

Lunch will be either something simple like sandwiches/omelette with veg sticks and fruit. Once or twice a week maybe something from cookbook.

Breakfast again varies. Sometimes toast, sometimes weetabix, crumpet, fruit.

Literally, anything I would eat. And he wolfs it down. Shame I can't say the same about 2.5yr old DD Wink

We give DS2 (10mo) all the above, and just used to fork mash it. He does sometimes refuse the spoon though, so I just put pasta onto his tray and let him get in with it. He are lasagne with his hands the other day and loved it. Plus garlic bread is a bit hit too. MIL is a bit horrified we give him food with garlic but I reminded her he's a baby not a vampire! She still can't get to grips with him eating curry though. He like naan bread so I just dip it in the curry and let him eat it.
