6mo still being sick - what's normal?

We have recently started weaning six month old DD. She is taking to it ok, mostly puréed and mashed food, some of which she prefers more than others and is also still bf the rest of the time. She was quite sicky when she was very little and is still being sick maybe 2-3 times a week, sometimes after solids and sometimes just after milk.

I had a lecture yesterday from MIL about how she is being sick because of the 'rich' food I am giving her (that day it was puréed apple & baby porridge, a bit of cooked puréed mushroom and some banana) and that I should give her rusks and milk for breakfast every day and give her the same food every day for a week before trying her on anything new.

I feel quite confident that we are giving her a good diet, but I just wondered whether DD's sickness is fairly normal for her age, and what other people's experiences are? She is a very big, healthy, chubby baby, happy in all other ways.

Watching with interest... Ds was never a sicky baby but has happily chucked up many times since we started with purees 3 weeks ago (6mths 1 week now). Purees are runny enough, no apparent pattern to it, very very frustrating though. Tonight he has taken a few spoonfuls of stuff he's readily taken before, thrown it all up along with his previous milk feed. No doubt he'll be wanting to feed all bloody night now as his tummy is empty. He's just not consistently interested. Thinking perhaps I should leave it a while?

Sorry, didn't answer you did I?! I thought about sticking to the same thing for a few days but the Annabel karmel book I have has a first tastes meal planner and has something different every day so I think you are doing by the recommended thing.

Hi - also watching with interest!

HugotheHippo (like the name!) - I think it is quite important to offer a variety of things rather than the same thing every day... but that's just my opinion. What you are offering doesn't sound rich to me at all.

Cakebaby - we are having the same problem. First month of weaning (we started at five months) went well, second months so so (DS had two chest infections during that time), but for two weeks now we are really struggling. Lots of throwing up, both milk feeds, solids or combined! I wonder whether it is a combination of learning to chew and swallow and a very congested nasal passage.

Hmm dodi you might be onto something there. Ds has had a cold for over a week and has been very snotty. At night I hear he is very congested and gurgly in his throat/chest sounding a bit like a chain smoker! I wonder if that is having an effect here?

Sorry OP, total hijack Grin

No, that's fine. Actually DD has been a bit blocked up this week too, so maybe there is a connection. At least to this week's throwing up!

DS is nearly a year and still quite refluxy - there's no guarantee that 6 months / weaning will help, despite what some people tell you! Like others say, colds always make it far worse, so I tend to try to keep him upright and not shaken up after meals when he's blocked up. What you're doing sounds great, and certainly better than sugary rusks and milk.
