Or should I be using his formula milk?

Realised that I don't really know if what I'm doing is ok! I know it can be used in cooking but unsure about the cereal aspect.

full fat cows milk can be used on cereal from 6m. Only should not be given as a drink until over 12m. hth

People tend to use formula in cereal when they're getting baby used to it, and when baby doesn't take the recommended minimum 500ml a day from drinking alone. But cows milk is fine, they just can't have lots of it. An ounce or two a day in food is fine. I suppose in theory it wouldn't make a difference whether they had an ounce of cows milk as a drink or on cereal? But obviously you wouldn't bother giving an ounce as a drink anyway.
