Sandwich filling ideas for 10mo

BotBotticelli · 14/10/2013 10:02

We seem to have got stuck in a soft cheese rut at lunchtimes. I am not keen on going packet ham in a sandwich cos the supermarket stuff is full of crap and salt and we can't afford the posh stuff.

I don't want him to get stuck on having Dairylea every day. I tried mashed up hard boiled eggs as he wasn't impressed. Any other ideas?

Like do packets of chicken breast for £1.39, they do loads of sandwiches and have a good date on them usually. Mashed banana, grated cheese, cucumber, tuna? I also give mine croissants and crumpets and pretty much whatever I'm having.

I thought eggs weren't yo be given before a year? Probably out of date but I was told this with my 3, it's no doubt changed again!

To be honest if you're going doing the dairylea route you might as well give ham :) both highly processed.... ds is 16 months and enjoys both, i think all in moderation is fine.... Also thinly sliced normal cheddar is good.

Tuna and mayo...
Hummus (not sure of spelling) and thinly sliced cucumber
Peanut butter (smooth obviously)
Cheese and tomato

igloo mine are older and I've never heard of that one. Who told you not to give eggs? Think its just raw eggs you need to avoidSmile

OP how about toasted cheese sandwich, tuna is fine as long as you don't offer it more than once a week. Nut butter? Hummus?

To be honest though, I wouldn't worry too much if you get the unimpressed thing. He could have just not been hungry that day Smile

I think no nuts (even peanut butter) until at least one because of allergies?

You could use avocado or grated carrots as sandwich fillings.

Have you got any research on that one mamij? We've got allergies but I happily gave nut butters from 6 months. Would be interested to know why leaving it to 12 months would have been better.

ds used to have tuna mayo, tuna and sweetcorn, cheese and tomato, cheese and coleslaw, houmous and cucumber, avocado, chicken, ham, Salad... Pretty much whatever an adult would have in a sandwich but without salty dressings .

Yay, nut butters are a hit here. Especially cashew nut and banana. Nut butters are fine from 6 months, it's only whole nuts for choking reasons, that should be avoided, I thought.

Also hummus and grated carrot. Avocado and egg, but I see he didn't like egg.

Sardines in tomato sauce was a hit today. Also Boursin, egg mayo, tuna mayo and houmous :)

JJJ I think it's to do with egg white allergy being so common it was twelve months. We didn't live in mainland uk then though, it was the hv who told me.

Thanks lots of good ideas there. Will buy some hummus and give that a go with some grated carrot. And always have tins of tuna and mayo in the house so will give that a go.

And oh yeah, good point about the Dairylea Blush think I have just taken against packet h since seeing this tv show about how it is made

DD1 has a nut allergy which we learnt the hard way by giving her food which contained peanut oil. Although we don't have a family history of asthma or allergies!

The allergyuk site suggests that nuts be avoided if there is a history of allergies in the family. And nuts should probably be avoided for the first few years of life.

mamij I've just read the allergy uk site and I didn't get that at all.

"There is some controversy as to whether it is better to wait to introduce allergenic foods to children, or to introduce them as soon as possible. We simply do not know, as research to date has been inconclusive".

"Currently, there is no evidence that avoiding potentially allergenic foods beyond six months of age is protective."

And the table at the bottom of the page says you can introduce peanuts from 6 months.

Sorry to hear that your DS does have a nut allergy though. That is very unfortunate.

He liked Hummus with carrot (grated) mixed in. Also made him little pizzas from english muffins topped tomato puree, cheese and oregano today and he hoovered it up!

Will try tuna mayo tomorrow or maybe coleslaw and cheese. Lots of good ideas here!
