Weaning

Really naive questions...

We're using Ella's Kitchen pouches at the moment for DS2 who is 7 months. Only started at 6 months so early days.

My HV keeps saying to just give him what we're having but how does this work when we don't eat at the same time as the children? Changing mealtimes isn't really doable & I only ever have a sandwich for lunch so what should I give DS2?

So as to not drip feed, I'm having problems with PND & anxiety (which I am getting help for) but it means even simple tasks are more difficult than they should be.

I'm concerned as DS1 is the fussiest eater ever & I'm totally convinced it's because I messed up weaning with him so I'm really trying to get it right this time. (DS1 is 3).

Depends what it is but sometimes I'd keep some of our dinner for next day's lunch and reheat, or freeze portions ( ie. fish pie, cottage pie, stew, pasta sauce, roast). Serve ds1 same as ds2 if less blended.

At 7 months he could eat a sandwich. Just cut into fingers and maybe give some cucumber or tomato slices or something to go with. For dinner just set aside a small portion stem you're coming or add the previous poster said, reheat the previous night's dinner.

and beat in mind these nutritious abd easy meals: Scrambled egg and peas or omelette, cheesy pasta with some spinach and tuna stirred in our even just yoghurt and a bit of fruit.

Pleasedon't make this something else to get anxious about. You're doing really well and the odd day without a 'proper' meal really won't hurt Wink Smile

Sorry for auto complete nonsense. I meant set aside a small portion of what you're cooking for dinner so he can eat it early

First of all, nothing you did with your DS1 made him a fussy eater. Fussy eaters just are. Same as non sleepers, tantrummers and bolters. It's just who they are. There are countless people, I'm sure, who will happily tell you the they have 2 children weaned in exactly the same way resulting in one fussy and one non-fussy child.

Stop beating yourself up and stop over thinking it.

Wean however you feel most comfortable. If you're happiest with purées stick with them and just gradually introduce finger foods and more lumpy stuff as you go along.

If you want to do a more BLW approach then a butty is absolutely fine. You do need to be conscious of the salt content in the bread as one slice normally has their full RDA but as long as they don't have any other salt during that day it's fine. Mine loved toast from day one so "stuff" on toast was always a winner.

I think the majority of people do a bit of both tbh.

I didn't eat tea with him as I don't like eating that early. I just made him whatever was in the fridge/cupboards at the time or I'd make extra of what I planned to have (if it was suitable for him) and re-heat mine later.

I didn't want salt free, non spicy, "healthy food" every single night so we just went with the flow!

A handy staple to have in was a big batch of tomatoey veggy sauce frozen in portions added to a bowl of pasta. Easy to pick up, quick to make, and he loved it. (Won't touch it now of course but he's learnt his toddler prerogative of "no I don't want it" so ends up with beef stew and dumpling 4 nights out of 7 Hmm )

You're doing fine, stop stressing Smile

Thanks people. I did wonder about saving some of our dinner for lunch the next day but wasn't sure if it would be safe to do so.

As long as it's stored properly and reheated properly it'll be fine.

You know what food is safe to be reheated, give yourself a bit more credit!
