Hi all

I'm a little early for this but best to be prepared...

DS is only 12 weeks at the min and is on Aptamil Pepti 1 formula. This doesn't satisfy him as much as a standard formula would because of its consistency so my paediatrician has given the go ahead for 'early weaning' in a few weeks time. I'm sure he'll answer any questions I have when I next see him but was hoping to get some hints and tips from you mums who've done it before.

  1. Do I go down the route of baby rice/porridge?
  2. If not, where do I start?
  3. If I do baby rice, do I stick to just baby rice for a while?
  4. Do I give a full portion as described on the packet or do I start off small and increase gradually over a few days?
  5. Where do these ready made jars fit in these days - i'm guessing people use them? Are they worth having in the house or better not? Are some better than others?
  6. Anything else you can tell me about starting to wean.

I realise i'm going to get some people flaming me and telling me to wait until 6 months eta which in an ideal world would be fine but as I said above - this advice has come from my paediatrician who I trust not to advise me to do anything I shouldn't.

I can understand that you trust the paediatrician but this advice is a bit strange to me.Is there any medical background why should you wean so early?I would get a second opinion on that, the formula doesn't satisfy him sounds like excuse my language loads of bollocks.

I'm not flaming you by the way but please get a second opinion on that,if there's no medical background to wean so early.

he's had all sorts of tummy troubles since birth - tried various different formula along with gaviscon, ranitidine and omeprazole. the pepti 1 which seems to work for his tummy is just like water so doesnt fill him for long.
dr discussed with dietician about moving on to pepti 2 early but she said to start hold out to 16 weeks on pepti 1 and start weaning rather than move to pepti 2 so early. ive got another appointment in a fortnight so can ask how to go about it then but just thought I'd get a heads up beforehand.

He might be going through a growth spurt hence the need for more milk.
Quit often tummy problems(gas, colics) get better after 3-4 months.
I have no medical background but the paediatrician is going against the general NHS guidelines

I'd ask for a second opinion on that, don't be afraid to ask questions,do the research about the weaning and ask the paed to justify weaning so early.Don't let them fob you off so easily.

And maybe try posting in breastfeeding/formula feeding? You might be more succesful over there to find people with similar issues?
