Help - my 10.5 month old is refusing food

Hi all

Very frustrated today. My 10.5 month old has up until now been a very good eater. She would be spoon fed and had finger foods as well.
On turning 10 months I increased the lumpiness of her food a bit more and tried to do some meals that were all finger foods eg meat balls with sweet potato chips and veg sticks etc. Since this change her feeding has become very hit and miss. More often than not she will take one or two spoon fills and will then push me away. She will of course let me feed her something she really likes eg yoghurt!!

My questions are; is this normal and a sign she is becoming more independent and
therefore should I just try to give all finger food meals? If she refuses a spoon fed meal should I just leave it and not try anything else, I'm finding I'm offering a lot of different options at the moment. Really don't want her to become a fussy eater.

Sorry this has been long.

Will she feed herself if you leave her to it?

Think you are doing really well to get to this stage before she does it, my dd went into a rage everytime we tried spoon feeding but would happily feed herself little sod

I'd just give her the food, it doesn't have to be special finger food, I'm sure she love a Sunday dinner or spaghetti Bol, relax and let her get on with it.

When you say you are offering different options, do you mean at each meal?

Yes, I think I need to take a deep breath and relax. Often if I'm chatting to someone else she will happily get on and feed herself better than if I'm watching.
When I say options I mean, today she pushed away the pork and mashed veg so I gave up and she ate slice of bread with Philadelphia and 1/3 of a banana. Should I give her different food if she refuses the first offering??
If you are giving runny food eg spag bol can they just eat it with their hands? Sorry stupid question.

ds2 hated being spoon fed. Yoghurt and weetabix he would just about tolerate.

I gave up trying tbh and just let him get on with it. Make spag bol with penne and it is surprisingly good finger food Grin

My other thought is are teeth coming through? None of my 3 liked being spoon fed when they were teething.

Oh and ds2 also hated lumpy puree but was fine with proper food so skipped that phase! he knows his own mind that one!

Yes, they can eat runny foods with their hands Smile

Have a look at www.babyledweaning.com for ideas.

It might not be the route you'd have chosen but if it works, it's better than having your efforts to spoon-feed ignored!

Never, ever, ever offer an alternative, we've been there and done it and its a very slippery slope!

At 10 months she doesn't need huge amount of solids, so if she refuses a meal, its fine to assume she's not hungry and clear away when everyone else has finished eating Smile

Thanks for the help. Will look at the link on blw. Don't think it's teething but you never know. Fingers crossed for a better day tomorrow Grin

We didn't choose blw either but dd was a total spoon refuser and we had to feed her somehow. Having already weaned one on purees I found blw so much easier.

If you are giving her your food, whether its spaghetti Bol, fish pie or chicken korma, just watch the salt levels, but you can get low salt stock cubes from most supermarkets these days Smile

Let her self feed if she wants.

Mine has developed a real sense of independence (11 months). Occasionally I've spoon fed her and she's now turning her head so let her too it. She also picks food up, examines it then chucks over the shoulder Grin

I'm very relaxed about it - she can have milk if she gets hungry (she's my second so I know she won't have milk forever - in fact she rarely feeds in the day as it is)

Quick up date - DD just about allowed me to spoon feed her weetabix this morning if she had her own spoon and was allowed to put her fingers in the bowl. She did very well at lunch and fed herself salmon, boiled potatoes and carrots, eating about 80% of what I offered. I think spoon feeding for us is over for now. Just need to get my thinking cap on for good finger food meals!! Smile

Little don't panic about what to feed her, there is loads of stuff she can have Smile.

When DD was weaning I borrowed this book from our local library and there are some great recipes and there are some great recipes that all the family can eat here or even try the MN recipes here Smile.
