Weaning

DD nearly six months - what's this weaning malarkey all about then?

Or rather - where on earth do I start?! Purees? Jars? Pouches? And BLW, what does that involve exactly? Benefits of one over the other?

I know this is rubbish but she's my first and I haven't got a clue what I'm doing. She's in nursery a few days a week so they'll be doing some of the work but they said they'll follow my lead - that's fair enough but I don't know where to begin!

Any advice of any sort will be gratefully received! We do have a high chair if that help....;)

Start by offering bits of food if she's awake during your meals. So have her in the high chair at breakfast for example. You can give mashed food or go straight to finger foods. I gave DD some porridge on a spoon (spoon in her hand) and she had a go and eating. Also let her grab the porridge and put in her mouth.

Food should be soft enough to squash with your thumb and fist sized chunks so she can grab it. Eg potato, roasted chicken thighs, veg etc. just let her play with it.

As she gets older, she'll eat more and more then you can think about swapping feeds for solids (bearing in mind that milk is most important for the first year). That's once protein is established and she's having a good balance of carbs/protein/fats.

Go easy on hard to digest foods, especially dairy, spicy foods, windy veg (onions etc) until she's a bit older and you're sure of no intolerances.

If you give her your food - don't add salt. She doesn't need it.
