What porridge and long sleeved bib?

Hi all, I have been trawling the net to find a good long sleeved, splash proof bib and just can't work out what is best. I have looked at Peva ones but some reviews say the patterns rub off!

Any suggestions? Isit worth spending money to get a good one?

Secondly, why do baby porridge a contain rice? I want to start weaning with a bit of porridge but can't find a baby brand that simply contains pure oats. Anyone got any clues?

I didn't bother with expensive long sleeved bibs, I just bought an array of cheaper ones, just so that I'd always got a clean one handy really. You might also want to buy a cheap shower curtain for your floor if you are beginning weaning.

Don't know why baby cereals contain rice either. Baby cereals are very expensive so I didn't bother with those either. We just gave supermarket own brand Ready Brek. At first we used to make it up and then add fruit puree, now they have things like strawberries/raisins or banana chopped up into it.

We got some good bibs from Ikea - long sleeves but a soft material so easy to use. We just use bags of porrige oats too

I don't bother with a big bib, I just got a wipe clean tablecloth from poundland that goes under the highchair and up the wall. Ds gets a wipe down! Also, just using porridge oats, just cook them well to make them soft.

Fantastic thank you for all of the advice. I love the money saving tips as I am always looking to economise! I don't know whyi just wasn't sure if you could use normal porridge oats. Sounds silly I know but it's my first time for everything!!

Wheat is not recommended for under 6mo. That why we have baby porridge and cereal. If you wean at 6mo you can just use adult porridge oats or ready brek.

I'm ofc assuming oats have gluten! And that rice is like baby rice, not a common allergen. I could be talking nonsense if oats don't contain gluten.

We used ready Brek too. I think baby cereals are just yet another opportunity to persuade new parents to buy things they don't really need. We've got a bibetta bib which is ok - you can wash it in the washing up bowl and it dries fairly quickly so you can use it a few times before it needs sticking in the machine. That said, a few cheapy ones are just as good if you're happy to stick them in the wash after every messy meal!

Oats contain some gluten but not as much as wheat (obviously!). Some coeliacs will eat them, some won't.

We used Organix 4 grain cereal when we were trying to be gluten-free, mixes much more nicely than sodding baby rice. They do some flavoured ones as well (banana etc) which have gluten in IRRC (+7months).

I use Ready Brek too.

I have loads of long sleeves bibs that I got in Sainsburys for £3.50 each. They are 20% off this weekend too.

They are terry towelling so wash really well.

I think the best bibs are SillyBillyz ones look on ebay for best prices, they wash brilliantly. I had them with my DDs but then sold most of them on ebay, so 5 years later now needed to buy some more for DS. However the ones that 2 DDs used would have been fine a 3rd time round they are so good. I bought 4 off ebay for about £20 so not cheap but after trying lots of cheap ones at the start with DD1 the SillyBillyz are mush more cost effective as they last so long.
