Weaning

oops, I've bunged up the baby...

Um, so we're getting better at taking food at one end but seem to have stopped at the other....

6 month old started weaning last week and so far has had baby porridge, carrot, banana, stewed apple and pears, peach and a bit of bread. He has gone from twice a day dirty nappies to once every two days...

I now know banana bungs them up... I have tried prunes/apricot/apple mix (a la Annabel Karmel) but he doesn't like it. I have also started him on abidec as he is bf, maybe that is the cause?

He doesn't seem uncomfortable at all, is this normal when they start weaning and at what point do I worry! Thanks

Bowel habits do change once they start weaning and if he's not straining or in pain I wouldn't worry too much. BM is a great bowel mover so just make sure he has plenty of bfs and I'd give the banana and bread a rest for a couple of days Smile.

Maybe cycle your baby's legs. As exercise is good for constipation. Gets the bowels moving. As baby is not moving yet this might help.

Thanks, cycling like Bradley Wiggins but still nothing... Peaches planned for tomorrow. Any other tricks other than prunes which he is very clear about not liking?

My DS used to struggle having a poo (earlier than this but same principle applies) - I used to sit him in his little vibrating bouncy chair and five minutes later would have to change his nappy, his clothes, wash the chair cover... he'd be happy again!

Once every two days and not uncomfortable doesn't sound like a problem to me? Sounds normal.
If worried I find figs and a little orange juice work wonders.

Thanks, not tried plums yet or bouncy chair...will feed plums on chair and see what happens! It's end of day three now that's why I'm bit concerned but ok will chill out a bit, I'm not the poo troll honest!

DD was having this problem. I chilled out a bit on the solids but she chooses down on a soft whole apricot and that seems to have got things moving a bit...

A lactation consultation also told me that breastmilk helps babies stay regular so I wouldn't worry too much if you are still bf. My little one stopped pooing as much once moving on to solids (and still bf) and I found this was one of the benefits of shifting to food. More mess going in but less mess coming out!
