Weaning

Blue cheese, brie etc?

I seem to be always asking food questions Blush

Tonight I am making tomato and cheese tart for dinner.

DH and DD1 like it made with soft blue cheese like cambozola, or with camembert. But can the 8 month old eat those? The cheese will be cooked through, piping hot etc, so I would have thought yes (in the same way that a pregnant woman could eat cooked blue cheese), but just wanted to double check.

And incidentally, when can you give cheese like this without cooking it? At the moment I am just giving DD2 things like Philadelphia and soft goat's cheese (presume that is OK??) on bread, and then little bits of hard cheese, but she sees DD1 (who is a bit of a gourmand when it comes to cheese) eating all sorts of exciting stuff and she is always reaching for it, and then crying when she can't have it.

The advice is almost certainly 1 years old. But the chance of listeria is pretty slim, and in a strong healthy 8mo old would probably not be all that serious. But of course it could be.

Cooked though I wouldn't worry at all, it's cooked and listeria is a wimpy one where heat is concerned so it's not going to survive the cooking anyway, so don't worry there. For uncooked, you have to weigh the risks, it's not likely, but how important is it that DD has a bit?

Thanks, that's good to know. So I can cook dinner tonight without worrying.

I think I'll hold off the uncooked stuff until she is a year old though, just to be safe, it's not long now really.

AFAIK the advice for weaning is that:

No whole grapes or nuts as they're a choking risk (until about 5yo, but cut up are fine, although some people say that even chopped nuts are a risk due to inhalation)

No honey until 1yo

Very little salt

Cows milk as a drink after 1yo, but in food is fine after 6mo.

Other than that, go for your life. I've never read anything that says that soft blue cheeses are a no-no.

Any cheese cooked is absolutely fine. Both of mine have had mouldy cheese before a year but tbh neither of them liked it Grin

cheeses are fine, mouldy cheese, goats cheese, etc etc mine have all had them from 6mths.

infact dd loves cheese and crackers for her lunch and eats all sorts of strong cheeses that i dont like! dp does tho, so maybe she gets her taste for them from him!

I've only just joined but like the helpful advice. One question what does DH, DD1, DD2 mean ??

The risk with pasteurised supermarket cheese is so low as to be negligible. In fact it's equal to chilled veggies from the produce section!
People confuse weaning with pregnancy advice ime. Grin
