BLW success (Have to share!)

DD is 7 mo and we started out very enthusiastic about BLW (a lot of that was because of positive threads on MN and very pro BLW HV team)

Then I completely lost confidence. We had a couple of gagging (not choking) incidents which were quite alarming. I'm not much of a cook and found it really hard to plan "baby friendly" meals. I'm also vegetarian so was stressing about cooking meat right and was worried about how much she was (or wasn't) eating.

So I got myself really stressed and as a result started doing more traditional weaning - mush and finger foods - steamed veg, toast, fruit etc.

Felt a bit sad about it as she obviously loves feeding herself but is quite happy being spoon fed too.

Anyway to get to the point, we went to my parents today and my mum had made spaghetti bolognese and done a no salt portion for DD. I just put it on her highchair to see what she would do and she ate loads and absolutely loved it (minimal gagging too!) Smile

It was fantastic and has really made me want to do BLW properly.

Sorry for ramble - I just really wanted to share this because I was so exicited and DP is sick of hearing me go on about how well she did!

If anyone has any meals that work well with BLW I would love to hear them and any success stories to help me keep the faith

Yeah - it is so nice when they gobble down food!

I was lucky that my dd (now 10 months) took well to blw, but some of my friends struggled. Favourites in our house include:

  • American style blueberry pancakes (cut in slices)
  • Omelette and fritatta
  • scrambled egg with mushrooms or spinach (quick, easy and dif to choke on)
  • quiche (homemade without salt)
  • tomato pasta
  • pesto pasta (made without pine nuts)
  • roasted veg in sticks including potatoes, carrots, sweet potato, parsnip
  • cooked courgette sticks, asparagus, broccoli

Well done Mimmee and baby Mimmee! It's hard not to panic when they don't eat much, gag, etc.

Sometimes keeping it simple helps if you don't always feel like cooking. DD (11mo) loves avocado, toast with lots of butter, avocado on toast (!), jacket potato and jacket sweet potato, grated cheese and cucumber sandwiches, green beans, noodles that she can suck up.

Last night I made her a delicious pasta and roast veg for tea. I started unpacking the shopping, turned around and she had managed to get hold of an crispbread for cheese and was eating away, completely ignoring my lovingly prepared meal!

Squiggly Those blueberry pancakes are amazing! Unfortunately she refused to eat them and would only accept a piece of plain white bread Confused.

That's the thing about BLW - you're letting them make decisions about food so sometimes they make decisions that you don't want them to! You just have to go with it. If I'm pottering around in the kitchen she will eat more as she enjoys watching me empty the dishwasher, fascinating as that is. If I sit and eat with her she gets bored quite quickly.

Thanks missrose, I think I just need to chill out a bit and, as you say, go with it!

Your post has inspired me to persevere with blw, the mess was really getting to me and the fact that so far not a lot seems to be actually swallowed....but to hear that it's best in the long run is nice! Also I was feeling stressed about making sure someone is always eating with DS (as the books suggest) but he still needs a lot of naps and sometimes misses mealtimes. You guys have given me some inspiration to keep going! Grin

Oh god the mess! I have twins of 11 months who are blw and the cleaningup after each meal is soul destroying. BUT they are both fantastic eaters. they shovel everything down and that makes up for the mess. Ds2 was blw and eats brilliantly. if he rejects anything I know it's because he doesn't actually like it. Ds1 now 6 was annabel karmelled and is a fussy fussy eater so I think blw is the way forward. well done to your DD, op. Stick with it. It's def worth it.

Sowlers I know exactly what you mean about the mess - and I am a massive clean freak!

Exactly like you I was stressing about not eating with her as I always used to try and grab something to eat while DD was napping but now just potter round the kitchen or sit down with her with a cup of tea.

But twins smokey! So glad to hear that they are great eaters - I've been flirting with AK but it's such a faff.

Definately going to keep going with it - her smiling little tomato sauce covered face has inspired me!

You've inspired me too!I started but then got a bit scared (for no reason) and was put off by the fact he didn't seem too bothered by it all. So started on mushy stuff. Again still not bothered. So maybe I just need to be patient and trust it will happen in his own time?!? I am so worried about choking.......but keen for him to enjoy food his own way. Has anyone had experience of blw where it didn't work and the baby became a fussy eater?!? Just curious.

DD is 1 next week. I am so pleased we BLW, she eats anything. At a food of the world buffet resturnt this weekend she put away......
Olives, feta cheese, sweet corn, corgettes, aubergine, roast beef, yorkshire pudding, lamb rogan josh, rice, naan, spring roll, roast potatoe, noodes, chicken pakora.
Small amounts of eah but she tried everything we put in front of her.
I can't imagine slaving over purees or having to remember to take them with me!!
Incidentally, because of work hours we rarely all manage to eat together at home so DD oftn as either our left overs or things like pasta, chicken and veg, fish fingers made just for her

stillwingingit I know I get scared with it too - but less so the more we go on and I see that she can handle it herself.

splatt your DD sounds amazing! I'm so impressed - that's where I want us to get to.

Bike thanks for the suggestions!
