blw and 'peanut sized' foods, advice please!

ds is 6 months today and I want to start a (not strictly by the book) blw. We have a pesco-vegetarian diet and therefore eat lots of pulses, but obviously, many are 'peanut sized', can we give them to him? and what about basmati rice? I thought peanuts were off the menu, but all things peanut sized too seems imposible if we are to give him what we are eating!

Rice is fine because it's too small to be a choking risk. Peas, beans and nuts can be a choking risk although lentils and small pulses will be okay. You could mush up pulses and allow DS to pick up the mush or spread it on pieces of toast or bread.

I mash peas, kidney beans (and other beans) and chickpeas - not puree, but mash, and DS seems to get on well with these. Rice is too small to choke on, as are lentils.

Previously, squished onto toast/breadsticks/rice cakes and now, by ramming the spoon vaguely towards his mouth.

Agree with others, our DD ate rice from 6 months and was fine. She used to grab handfuls and stick them in her mouth. Agree too that mashing the beans and pulses with a fork and then let DS feed himself.

If he can pick it up, he should be ok to eat it (I think that was what I read when we started)
