advice on giving fish to a 7mo please

The only fish my 7mo has eaten so far in the inside of a fish finger mixed in with her purees. I want to introduce her to some other fish but not really being a fish eater myself I'm a bit stumped.

I was thinking of buying some tinned fish, but which should I go for that doesn't have bones and would be ok for DD to eat?

Personally I wouldn't bother with tinned. A small salmon fillet can be steamed in the microwave and added to some mashed potato. Or some fresh haddock or pollock, you can poach it in a bit of milk. Just put it in a shallow bowl, cover with milk, cover with clingfilm and microwave for a minute or so (check it's cooked through) You can run your fingers around it before it's cooked to check it's got no bones in.

I used to buy fish fillets and cut them in to teeny portions and freeze them so I just had to take one out, cook it as per above and add to any vegetables.

Ok thanks, that all sounds easy enough!

Timeoutofmind, DS (11 months) has had baked salmon, poached haddock in a fish pie, tinned sardines, and tinned mackerel.

I'd definitely recommend tinned mackerel for tastiness - DS has it on a cracker, or in a sandwich with cream cheese. He really likes it, and so do I Grin.

Just flake the fish carefully to make sure that there are no bones (some tinned fish contain bones that are soft can that can be eaten, eg sardines - still, it's best to be careful).

as you move away from purees on to little pasta shapes you could try making a tomato sauce which you can freeze in portions. You can then add a teeny bit of tinned tuna to it and hey presto, tuna pasta for tea :o

Ok cheers achtungbaby - I will buy some tinned mackerel aswell and see how she gets on with that (also gives me an opportunity to try it)!

headfairy yes that's a good idea, I make a lot of pasta sauces so was gonna try her with some pasta soon. She is good with lumps so I thought nows the time to try varying her diet a bit more.

I love that I get 2x snack times every day now Grin.

The thing with tins is you only need such a small amount, so make yourself a tuna mayo sandwich for lunch and use the rest for your dd's tea :o

Agree with above, but watch out for the salt content on tinned fish.

My advice is only feed your baby sardine sandwiches just before bath time and never just before a toddler group. Everyone will want to know who brought the stinky baby.

Also some babies do slimy green poos after eating oily fish for the first time. Nothing to worry about just a bit distinctive.

Thank you both, and that's good to know VeronicaCake!
