10 month old DD still pushes out food from mouth

My DD, 10 months, still pushes out far more food than she actually swallows.

We started off with BLW (I did BLW with my 2.5yr old too), but she is not as good as DS was at self feeding. She doesn't like being spoonfed either, apart form one or two spoonfuls that she will tolerate.
Whether she is self feeding or being spoonfed, she pushes out most of the food out with her tongue.
I can't remember DS doing this at all, maybe in the first couple of weeks. but DDS is 10 months old!

it is really disheartning seeing the food being pushed out, as hardly any food makes it to her mouth anyway. She does swallow food, a very very tiny amount I guess, as her poo is definitely shows evidence.

Is there something wrong with her? has anyone else's DC pushed out food at this age?

I would contact your HV for advice.

Some babies still have their tongue thrust reflex at 6 months but to have it at 10 seems a bit unusual.

The HVs we have are pretty clueless about almost everything. I don't trust them and they wouldn't know what to do. Although I am planning to take her to get weighed next week, so I shall ask, but not expecting any proper advice.

Maybe I should take her to the GP?

yeah take her to the gp then. I think its defiinately worth getting checked out.

How is she as regards other 'milestones'? Sitting, rolling etc?

It can be hard to tell whether the pushing out tongue is just the way she is eating, or a tongue thrust reflex.

If your hv is rubbish, I would either travel to another one (we can go to several different baby clinics in our area - don't know if it is the same for you), or ask gp.

She does swallow a little bit, as there is nappy evidence. I don't know whether it is because she doesn't want to eat it or she can't eat it. Things like peas, she picks up and puts in mouth and she always spits it out chewed up. It this normal for her age?

She is fine otherwise developmentally. She can crawl, roll over etc and she is happy and alert. Only other thing is that she has no teeth yet. Could this be connected to the tongue thrust?

Does she have a lot of milk? Maybe she just isn't very hungry?

Yes still has all her milk feeds, not dropped any yet. Feeds 3 hourly!

She has been a bit better the last couple of days, and keeping a bit more food in. Although she does spit out a lot. I think she's just not that into food still, but her interest in food is increasing, so it's just a case of waiting and seeing. If she is still pushing out food at 1yr I will go see the GP.

My 10month old ds has 4 milk feeds of 7oz a day (although he doesn't always drink all of the middle two feeds) so his feeding schedule goes:
Milk feed at 6-7am ish when he wakes.
Breakfast at about 8 (spoonfed)
Nap
Milk feed at about 11
Lunch (blw) around 12.30
Milk feed at 2 (this is normally the one he doesn't drink much of but if I don't give him it he won't nap for longer than half an hour)
Nap
Dinner (spoonfed) at 5
Milk feed before bed at 7

Before I started this routine he was still feeding 3 hourly and didn't want to eat solids at all.

Sorry if I've bored everyone there! Grin

I did BLW with DS2 which he took to with gusto.

He didn't get any teeth until 13 months and it didn't slow him down in the slightest - sorry.
