Animal Crossing - help with visiting other islands

I’ve been playing for a few weeks and have used Nook miles to visit other islands but I need more types of fruit and trees and think I will need to visit other people’s islands to do this.

Can anyone give me an idiots guide as to how to do it. I’ve looked on reddit for things like dodo codes but am a bit unsure about this as I’ve read some stories about poor etiquette etc.

I don’t know anyone irl who plays. Any help on how to get friends and share codes would be gratefully received. 🙂

You either need to be friends with someone or use a dodo code but in both cases that other person must also be online and have their gates open for visitors

Also, DODO codes are only active for short amounts of time, so by the time you find them on reddit etc it's probably shut.
