Son wants to buy ps3 games

Hi, I'm new to the gaming world but my 13 year old son is well and truly hooked! We upgraded our ps3 to a ps4 a while back and recently my son has discovered a game series that has 2 games that are only on the ps3. He's asking to buy these 2 games and I'm just not sure. Is it the done thing to buy games for old machines? I feel like it's going backwards! He said he's watched others play the games on youtube and wants to play himself. I get that, but it seems odd to me. Would any of you have done that? Or your kids? I'd appreciate any advice! The game is Infamous if that helps!

Assuming the game will play on the PS4 then that's absolutely fine, (you should be able to find this out by googling the game), some games were designed for the previous incarnation of the device it doesn't mean you're going backwards playing it.
I don't know the game so can't help on that side!

I have friends with multiple machines of various ages who play all sorts of old games. It's a gaming thing. I'm presuming he still has his PS3. My DH still has his original xbox set up in a room so he can play a couple of the games he enjoyed on it.

We still have a ps3 as well as the PS4 and my son plays on both. A game for the ps3 is likely to be very cheap so I'd let him buy it.

I understand that the ps5 that's coming out this year will have backwards compatibility which would be great.

Thank you for replying. I'll look into the game and see. We currently have both consoles set up in the front room as hes worked out how to connect them both to the telly!

My son often buys the older retro games as do his friends so it's not odd as long as they are compatible but if your son is like mine he will know all about that !

I think it’s normal to want to play old computer games. A lot of PS3 games are still really good and the bonus is they are often cheap secondhand.

It's like your son watching a movie on video rather than streaming it. Not weird at all.

I dont see the problem. It's a game he wants to play and he has the console still. I'd let him crack on.

You wouldn't bat an eyelid about someone buying music, a DVD, or a book that was released many years ago. Videogames are going the same way. It's a sign that games as an art form are maturing.

I'm confused by this one. You have both consoles set up but you don't want him to buy games for one of them? Weird.

@premiumshoes we only got the ps3 out to see if it worked. Once he knew it did he asked to buy games

But why is it a problem? He has the console so why would it ever be an issue to buy a game for it?

Retro gaming is a big thing now.

@premiumshoes I dont get gaming and thought it was a bit weird. Which I why I posted here to ask for advice. The ps3 has been sitting, unused in the shed since we got the ps4. My son has just expressed this interest in old games only when he knew the old console worked.

He has ordered both games from Ebay. One was unopened so hopefully he won't be disappointed!
