Pokemon games for the Nintendo DS

Hi

I'm after some recommendations for Pokemon games for the DS for my 8 yr old son.
He LOVES Ultra Moon and has asked for Ultra Sun for Christmas (even though he knows they're basically the same )
I'd like to get him another game too, but am clueless about what the different Pokemon ones are like.
Are they all basically the same - i.e. walking around battling/catching Pokemon? What about the Mystery Dungeon ones? Is Detective Pikachu any good for that age?

Any advice much appreciated!

I've never played any Mystery Dungeon games or Detective Pikachu, but the main series games are basically the same - walking around, catching/battling Pokémon/other trainers/working towards defeating the Elite Four, etc.

If he loves Ultra Moon/Sun, maybe consider one of the older main series games; X & Y or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are the ones available for the 3DS. The older games have gyms in them, whereas Sun/Moon/USUM don't.

I've been playing Pokémon Y and it's a lot of fun.

I wouldn't say there's any point getting Ultra Sun if he has Ultra Moon, the Pokemon aren't that different at all and it's exactly the same game. There's only a few Pokemon that are actually different.

I highly recommend X or Y, they are one of our favourites to play (my partner and I always buy them both so we can trade Pokemon) and he'll probably really enjoy the gym side of things, it's similar to battling the island kahunas just in a building instead of out and about! It's a completely different storyline so he should really enjoy it!!

My son would advocate buying them all, but he’s an obsessive so maybe not the wisest advice to follow. He’s slowly completing his collection with pocket money and birthday money. Slow going, as he took some time out to investigate Zelda games.

Alpha sapphire and omega ruby are pretty good (gen before sun/moon)

Personally i dont like the mystery dungeon ones

There is a good free game on the Nintendo store- pokemon rumble

MapleSpice he seems to have a long list of reasons why he wants Ultra Sun - his little brother will also be getting it so hopefully they can work through it together.

Right, I'll have a look at Omega/Sapphire and X/Y. Will give the dungeon game a miss.

IncyWincy my son is also obsessive. I was thrilled when he finally completed his pokedex on Pokemon Go - only for Niantic to release a whole new generation a week later . I've had to join special Facebook messenger groups so he can battle and catch the legendaries!
