I don't get it. I chopped down lots of trees then inexplicably died. Now I seem to be watching someone else play I think. I'm on a ps4
It's baffling!

I thought the exact same thing! I seemed to just be following people and watching them build stuff and collecting different weapons every so often. I'm a fairly prolific gamer and have experience of quite a few genres but I couldn't get my head around it at all.
I thought it was going to be like Team Fortress but it seems really odd and hard to get into

I'm glad it's not just me. I like gaming, but I like time to get my head around what I'm doing. Might watch some playthroughs on youtube.

After you die you can usually watch somebody else for a bit and see how it's done.

One of my dc hates it and another is really into it.

I played with kid2 for a bit and am now also really into it.

If you land in a quiet area maybe on a roof and hack into it to find a chest and get some weapons, you can potter about and work out all the other bits as you go. There's no tutorial but as I say, you can watch others play.

So is it OK to nick other people's stuff?

Well you'll have a job doing so unless you shoot them unto death.

You can drop stuff for other people to pick up if you're in the same team.

My DS says:
loot houses to obtain guns and building materials.
Apparently if you build, you get some protection if you're shot.
You're supposed to kill everyone until there's only one standing.

As far as I can tell, they play as a group and help each other. They even plan embushes. He says you can leave a valuable item and then set a trap. So watch out when looting.

Never go to tilted towers or dusty divot (whatever that is) because that's where you can find more opponents.

Lweji Thu 17-May-18 18:54:05

When you start you should be more aggressive, join lots of fights, so that you learn how to use the weapons.
Try to finish off your fights quickly, or people will hear it and you'll get other shooters joining.

It seems that you may have alerted other players by chopping down trees.

He's quite pleased to be able to contribute to MN.

Finally, go to the settings and choose controls Builder Pro. He thinks it's better as they allow you to build faster with just two clicks instead of three.

I just saw a chest and hid near it and shot someone yay!

SuperLoudPoppingAction Thu 17-May-18 19:08:29

Listen to Lweji's son.

Only chop stuff if you're fairly sure you're in a quiet area. The places with names emblazoned on them on the map are usually busier

cool! I've got a bit of time next week I'll try that! Lweji please can you thank your ds. His tips sound very handy.

Thanks to this, DS has been insisting I should also play fortnite. confused No thanks. grin

Also, please ignore my misspelling of ambush. blush My excuse is that I swap between two languages online.

What mode are you playing in? Have you got the full game or are you playing the free version which is just landing and killing people? Have you tried playing in 50v50 mode, if you land well on 'your' side of the line it should give you more time to get the hang of things plus you can watch your teammates and see what they do. Since the meteorite landed Tilted (can't remember it's new name) Towers is less busy. My best tip is hide in a bush and wait people out wink.

I'm a very active spectator, get a bit flustered playing myself because I normally have two sons shouting conflicting instructions at me and I get cross. It's great though. Ask me anything!

OhYouBadBadKitten Fri 18-May-18 14:16:32

embushes sound posh grin

MrSlant In the free version. I'll try 50/50 when I next play. I was thinking that if I enjoyed it then in the summer I might buy the full version, but I'm not sure about coop games.

I'm sure someone was shouting things in french when I was playing? was that someone with a head set?

Someone with a mic in their headset, I've heard some really endearing conversations between boys making friends, they say hi in their own language then generally switch to broken English and it makes me all mushy at the thought of everyone coming together online gaming and then the world will be a nicer place. I really need to get a grip.

It's normally if you are in a four man team that you can talk to each other. I like hearing the mum's in the background and siblings/pets etc but that is also why my boys aren't allowed one, not having my loud style of parenting/bursts of song broadcast to the world!

The full game will be out for free at some point this year so don't buy it.

Are you any good at building yet, that looks to be the key skill.

OhYouBadBadKitten Fri 18-May-18 15:21:45

I've only played it once. No chance since, but I'll practice when life is a bit calmer smile

This is a great article about the expertise of a few 13 year olds

I like the bonding that goes on. DS is 19 and a gamer. He makes friends all over the world. One Dutch lad he has been playing games with since they were both about 12.

I downloaded it to my pc but didn't even know how to control it blush a games console would be better but we don't have one.

Lweji Fri 18-May-18 15:56:16

DS doesn't play much with his local friends. He has his own international possy.

It's quite funny how silent they go when I have to tell him off.

He's 13, yes. grin

SuperLoudPoppingAction Fri 18-May-18 20:32:34

Frax if you go into settings from the lobby you can see the keyboard controls and set them to keys you like.

The default keys for building didn't work at all on my laptop.
