Youngest DS asked for an X-Box for Christmas which he duly received. He had been warned he would not be allowed to play age inappropriate games which he seemingly understood as previous rules also applied to use of our Wii console. He has Disney Infinity & Minecraft.

Since returning to school he has moaned every day that "everyone else" is allowed these games and he is the only one being left out. Obviously this is a gross exaggeration but, having said that, his school friends who are also on X-box do have these games listed next to their names. So it leave me wondering what games are out there which appeal to 9-10 year old boys but which aren't rated 16? I am not a total tyrant and am happy to consider a few years' difference but there is no way he is playing games designed for young adults upwards.

I have promised DS a new game as a treat for an excellent school report but we appear to be at stale mate with him refusing to even consider anything other than these games.

You could see if he'll compromise with something a bit more 'mature' in theme than Minecraft and Disney games but not at the level of Battlefield and such? It's tricky with kids as young as 9 and 10, though.

Something like SSX, the snowboarding game might appeal to him, search for Common Sense Media, they do reviews based on games' quality and age appropriateness so that might give you an idea. I'd link you but my phone isn't cooperating.

Lego games are PEGI 7, Fable is a 16 but very silly. Final Fantasy, also a 16 but no blood at all, and I've been playing them since I was 10. Overlord, 16 but very silly and cartoony. Star Ocean:The Last Hope is a 12, very good game too, made by the same people who made Final Fantasy. The first Mass Effect is a 12, but the sequels are 15 for good reason, so probably best to wait on that one.

Does that help?
