Which games machine is least adult-unfriendly? (Sitting room)

We are replacing the cathode ray tv so fo the first time the kids will be able to ask for gaming devices. But this will all be in the sitting room.....

Do you think a wi is the most adult-friendly device to have? When I see people on a wi doing sports or dance it kind of makes sense whereas fifa 14 and minecraft are a bit meaningless to an adult yet dominate the room I think.

Thanks in advance

Xbox 360 with kinect gives you the dance type games without the need for extra controllers that the wii needs.

I can help you pick a console, but I need a bit more information first. I don't know what you mean for "adult-friendly" ? Do you mean maybe, something that is easy to set up and use? Or do you want it to play a specific genre of games? Or, if you are buying it for your children, do you mean that you would like the console that is best for them at their age group? (Wii is best for young children and families, Xbox1 for teenagers, PS4 for older teens and adults, as a very rough rule of thumb)
If you tell me what it is you are looking for, then I can help you out with picking a console for your family.

Congratulations on running the "a games machine won't work on our telly" routine for so many years. That's up there with "it's playing that tune to warn you they've run out of ice cream"

Anyway:
How old are DCs?
Do you want to play games yourself?
Is budget a major consideration? (If so then get an old machine like a Wii, or even a PS2 which you can buy cheap, and get a load of great old games for for peanuts)
Do you want to use it for iPlayer?
Do you want to play DVDs/BluRay on it.

I think a PS3 is the best bet because you can use it to watch things like iPlayer and netflix and it doubles as a blu ray player.

Wiis are a bit crap really unless all you want is a novelty game machine. Let them have their FIFA! You can ration the time they spend on it and all of the games come with recommended age minimums, like films.

And minecraft is great - like virtual Lego but with build your own circuits and even some geology built in.

There are plenty of adult friendly games for you to involve yourself in and anyone with more than 2 brain cells cal use any of the commonly available consoles so ask the kids what they want and go for it.

We have loads of gaming gadgets but the one that that gets he most use is my ps3.

We have a WiiU and a PS3, and we very rarely use the PS3. We all prefer the wii, and we are 2 adults and 2 teenagers.

We have a Wii and an XBox 360. The Wii isn't played with very much - mostly by DS1 and DS2 together, so it's probably the more whole family friendly console. The sort of games DH has for the XBox 360 are usually most definitely adult! He's got his eye out for a PS3, at the moment, as they're coming down in price (and are likely to get cheaper over the next few months). Only with himself in mind, rather than DS1, though.

Wii u comes with a separate tablet thing so the adults can have telly on while one person plays the game. I find wii less frustrating than ps3 as wii requires a lot less system updates,if you go for ps3 then get 500 gig one. You cant get minecraft for the wii. In terms of socially acceptable obsessions fifa is a v good game to encourage I think, i want to subtly wean my ds to fifa and car games rather than japanese anime rpgs....

Wiis aren't crap! You can get virtually all the same games except the hardcore shooting ones and mine craft .
I was a pretty hardcore gamer pre children and I would choose a wii u with children in the house everytime. We have had so much fun with our wii for years and now have upgraded it to a wii u.

Some of the fun sociable games like just dance, pikmin qetc you can get on all the consoles but the wii u has the Nintendo only ones like super mario 3d land, super mario, mario kart, Zelda etc.

I may get an cob one next year as well but the wii u is more that enough pre teen and even for teens - we all had so much fun yesterday playing nintendoland and super mario 3d and that's 2 adult gamers and a 9 and 6 y old - everyone able to take part.

Everyone I know who play Xbox or ps a lot plays it in a darkened room on their own. Though to be fair I believe the new Xbox one offers more of an entertainment hub.

Also, if you are replacing the tv with a new one, chances are it will be a smart tv anyway so you'll have Iplayer Netflix etc access through that.

One annoying thing is you can't get FIFA 14 on the Wii U only FIFA 13 as Nintendo had a fallout with Electroniv Arts. So my 9y old plays FIFA 14 on the 3DS and my tablet - and mine craft on here too. He plays FIFA 13 on the wii (not major amount of difference anyway). I imagine EA will put their toys back in the pram for FIFA 15 later this year anyway once they see how many wii u's sold this Xmas ...

Xbox one not cob one!

To play just dance 2014 on the wii u you just need the normal one unit wii remote plus (built in motion sensor) in your hand that you use for other games. with the Xbox kinect can you just dance? That is quite cool. Still no buggy to hold a small remote. For the wii u you can also play with the tablet and the wii pro controller which is like an Xbox type controller.

I seriously would be amazed if any family would be disappointed with a wii u, but I haven't owned an Xbox or ps for a few years (haven't felt the need to)
