DS/DSi/DS lite - what's different???

Can anyone shine any light on the differences between the different Nintento DS's? DS is saving his pocket money to buy one, second hand - but I'm confused about all the different types that there are now.

Thanks :)

dsi has a camera on it i think.

not sure about the others.
ds has one, but luckily he isnt that interested.
My nephew has 3 and all you get is a grunt from him when you walk in the door, he never lifts his head from it.

dsis has to argue with him to get him to get off it for home work or school.

they're bringing out a 3d version so there'll be loads of old ones on market

dsi is the latest - internet compatible but good parental controls

Ds is the original. Quite big and clumpy. Can only be bought pre-owned.

Ds Lite is the updated, slimline version of the original. Again, only pre-owned now.

DSi is the 3rd gen. It has cameras, photo editing software, mp3 player. It now also comes in an XL version which is just bigger screens.

Soon will be the 3DS. Same as the DSi but with 3D capability, better cameras, more memory etc.

We're a gamer household!Grin

Thanks for that - definately cleared things up - as he only gets 70p a week at the mo, it will take a while for him to save, so we have said we will add to it if he is serious about it.

Will wait until March and see what comes up on Ebay then!!

The basic DS isn't made any more and I haven't seem one for years. It had a slightly chunky case.

The DS Lite can still be bought pre-owned, but isn't made any more - they have squarish shiny cases. It had the same functions as the basic DS, but better screens.

The DSi is the one currently available - like a DS Lite but with a matt case. It also has a camera, with funky picture-morphing functions, and a recorder/voice changer thing.

There is a new one coming out (as posters mention) - DS Excel. Pricy!! Suggest you get a second-hand DSi.

DS is a the big silver one, has GBA backwards compatibility.

DS Lite is smaller with brighter screens and slightly improved battery life and a new D-pad design.

DS Lite XL is a larger version of the DS Lite.

DSi has brighter screens, the addition of a camera, the GBA backwards compatibility removed and a Media card slot for storing games on downloaded from the the DSi online service.

3DS is a new handheld, not a DS, it is about as powerful as a Wii, it has a touch screen and a 16:9 3D upper screen that shows 3D via depth rather then leaping out at you (like them cardboard theater things, different stages inside the screen) it will have some form of video service for watching 3D movies, take a media card (proprietary format) for downloadable content, have backwards compatibility for DS, an internal gyroscope and 2 stereoscopic cameras as well as 1 internal camera.

it will also have region locking in someway that has not been explained and costs far too much money (more then 200 quids).
